Internet Marketing - As a business owner, do you understand it?

Guest post by: Brian Mathers

Article Overview: Many large brand corporates who operate a website need worry less when trying to have their website rank in Google for a number of keyword search terms. The corporate brand if well known will have people talking about it on many other websites apart from the brand site itself. This is excellent 'fuel' for the brand website as research shows having a number of 'quality inbound links' pointing at your website is one of the many things a search engine such as Google takes into account. But you as a business owner reading this article, how much do you know about how a website actually ranks your business website? What 'test drive' do you take that gave you confidence the website platform you were purchasing would take your marketing messages and reach its intended audience? Read here why so many websites fail?

Internet Marketing - As a business owner, do you understand it?

Right now you might be sitting in front of Google typing in keyword phrases you think people will use to find your website. When you are doing this you might find that your website is not ranking for these keyword phrases which is adding further frustration to your day. So, two things can be wrong here, one is the keyword phrases you are trying - how do you know people are actually searching on that term, do you know how to do keyword research properly? And, two are these keyword terms you are typing into the Google search engine actually appearing in the appropriate sections of any particular page on your website - so how good a journalist are you to market online?

If you have the ability to edit page content on your website, this means you probably have a Content Management Software (CMS) solution supporting your website that was put together by your website developer. But is is fit for purpose? To purchase a website and have it built with a CMS means you must have had sufficient knowledge to choose both that CMS platform and be confident in your website developer - and you make a great journalist who writes compelling content - but are you? How do you know you were given a website solution that would bring Return On Investment? Because right now here you are sitting in front of your PC as the owner of a website with no traffic no visitors no sales. What has gone wrong?

You are like many other business owners across the UK and probably the globe who does not have a 'brand name business' but are alongside many of the small medium enterprise business owners who are just trying to make a living and thought having a website would increase that annual turnover you dream of. With the current economic climate many small medium business owners are looking again at the thought of having a website or redeveloping the one they already have because the first attempt at having a website has not worked.

This is where the expertise of ICT Advisor.com come in. They are contacted by many businesses who in their first engagement with their team of experts will request they conduct an in-depth audit of their website which thas been found not to be bringing them traffic. Nine times out of ten ICT Advisor.com find it was badly designed, has pages that will not convert the visitor due to poor layout and architecture, and their was no documented plan to support the design at the beginning which had come from carrying out the right type of research that would ensure your website would have a chance of being successful. The UK business community has a high failure rate for websites because of these ssues alone, but there are many more that contribute to this failure rate.

Website developers and agencies are in abundance. This unregulated community will come along with their portfolio of 'eye candy' websites and have you chose a design you like, which then leads to you writing a nice big cheque to the website company and you get a website. Would you do this when choosing a car without testing driving it or checking what miles to the gallon you are likely to achieve once purchased. The simple answer is NO!

Business owners do not know how to choose a website developer nor do they know what to look for 'under the hood' when it comes to choosing a website platform that will actually bring visitors and sales. The big brand names don't worry to much about all this or the architecture because they have loads of budget that they can throw at marketing to raise awareness of the new site. They will bombard television and radio until their domain is stuck firmly in your mind and you will just type the domain name straight into the address bar.

But for the small business owner with a limited budget who have high expectations of their website and are told by the website company - no problem - give me your money and you will have a website and it will look great! But a website like a car apart from looking good 'needs fuel'. Business owners do not know really what the mix of this fuel is that will combust and kick start their website to see it ranking in the likes of Google.

Don't let the website developer talk 'eye candy' with you. Instead ask him to show you websites and tell you stories about how much revenue that website brought a client of theirs over the last year, better still ask the business who purchased the website from the developer - is this a true story the website agency is telling me? Look for the evidence.

If you need help in finding it, this is where ICT Advisor.com come in. They know their websites and can show many that have gone from £0k upto £10m in eighteen months in some cases having had their assistance and input. They know what to look for in a website agency when they come to work with one and provide that agency with knowledge transfer from ICT Advisor.com. Let them help your business find out if your current website company cuts the mustard or have them seek out a website design team that builds fit for purpose websites and does things in an 'ethical way' that will see your website bring wealth and profitability. ICT Advisor.com is becoming a centre of Ecommerce Excellence to ensure you deal with the right type of website agency and have a website that is search engine friendly and brings many visitors to the pound to do business with you.

Good Day from Arizona Good Day from Arizona - Hi everyone. I am a small business owner in Tucson, AZ. I have an Internet based HR program that I designed for the small business owner and I am looking at this forum to help me in learning how to do Internet Marketing. I believe that the small business community has a wealth of knowledge and if we all pool our collective "brain power" we can help one another succeed. I look forward to being a part of this interesting group.
Re: The Mobile Marketing Re: The Mobile Marketing - Mobile Marketing involves communicating with the consumer via cellular (or mobile) device, either to send a simple marketing message, to introduce them to a new audience participation-based campaign or to allow them to visit a mobile website. Some of the tools of the trade and a few of the concepts that will be featured in this Mobile Marketing 101 series are: Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS) Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) Bluetooth, Wireless and Infrared Mobile Internet and Social Media Mobile Applications Mobile connectivity not only enables people to connect to the Internet via a cellular telephone, PDA or other gadget, but also consolidates the different communication channels in a simple, yet effective, medium. Cheaper than traditional means for both the consumer and the marketer - and easy enough for almost any age group to understand and engage with - Mobile Marketing really is a streamlined version of traditional eMarketing.
Re: Kevin's Case Study #11 - A New Forum Category? Re: Kevin's Case Study #11 - A New Forum Category? - Hi Kevin, Like GT suggested, I also think you can add Internet Marketing as a sub category in the Marketing section and also a Social marketing as subcategory. Online marketing/internet marketing/online promotion are the same, and it will be best to use the common term - Internet marketing. I can't think about someone to moderate a Social Marketing category. We all use it, we all know how to make it work and we all have our own different experience with it.
Re: Hi from a Manhattan coach Re: Hi from a Manhattan coach - Hi Julie, Welcome to the forum, it's great to have you here and thank you for telling us a little about yourself. You sound like a very enthusiastic person who likes what she does and in Internet Marketing that is very important and you also sound like a 'people person' which is great. Internet Marketing is time consuming and challenging but can also be extremely rewarding and hopefully profitable. I don't know how many forums you have signed up to but this is one of the best. The support and guidance you get here is what makes it the success that it is but as I am sure you know from looking at the side bar that there are many aspects of business that are catered for here which will help you along the way, best wishes, Mal.
Re: How many mambers of this forum are also member of WF? Re: How many mambers of this forum are also member of WF? - Hi Kevin, I have to agree with Tanny. All forums are unique in their own way, but doesn't mean that one is better than the other. What you might get out of one forum, you may not get from another. For instance, the WF focuses on Internet Marketing, while this forum focuses on Entrepreneurship. Each has their own set of benefits. I don't think you can really compare one to the other, unless of course they focused on the same topic. I have learned a lot from this forum, stuff I would never have gotten from the WF. With that being said, I've learned a lot from the WF, specifically since I need to know about Internet Marketing and running an online business. The addition of the Online Business forum here will help, and Jeff is doing a great job as moderator.
