I read a write up on the above title published by Professors K Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne of Insead University. My expectation was very high. I wanted to learn something new. I am the type who will read the text books of my children and other kids. I have always learnt something new which I was not aware of. Unfortunately, it was not so as far as this book is concerned. It is just an old wine in a new bottle.
If people want to read one of the best books on tactics and strategy, I would recommend that they read the book "Tactics" by Dr. Edward de Bono. He is the propounder of the concept of Lateral Thinking. I have never undergone training in such programs. But have learnt a lot from it.
I am a practicing manager for 36 years this August 2008 and battle scarred. I have wounds and scars all over my body, mind and soul. I do not have the exalted formal qualifications of such academics. Let me tell you something. Tactics shapes Strategy but Strategy drives Tactics. Both cannot be learnt in class rooms. It has to be learnt in the battlefield. What is taught is only theory by people who know all the directions but have never captained ships - with apologies to the great (Late) Mr. Robert Townsend.
Lastly, there are so many books on Strategy; it has become meaningless and unnecessary. There are only 4 forms of Strategy – Offensive, Defensive, Flanking and Guerilla. You may need to apply all forms when you are fighting. No situation is identical.
Hence my advise to all entrepreneurs and managers is to understand the basic principles of strategy and tactics and then apply your own thoughts because nobody knows the your business as well as you do. All management consultants, business coaches and the likes can only share their wisdom and guide but you will have to fight all alone in the battlefield.
