Motivation and Morale

Motivation and Morale

Motivation and Morale Motivation at workplace is well known. In various theories on motivation, it is established that Recognition, Challenges and Money are the three main motivating factors, though not necessarily in the same order. In this page, we will establish the link between Motivation and Morale.

According to behavioral scientists, Morale represents interest, enthusiasm and a positive approach of people to their jobs. Morale and Motivation both go hand in hand. Higher the motivation, higher is the morale and vice versa.

Symptoms of Low Morale:

High staff turnover Poor performance Delays in execution of orders/instructions Poor documentation Regular complaints Petty grievances magnified Avoidance of tasks Increased red tape Causes of Low Morale:

Absence of good and creative Leadership Absence of job satisfaction Incongruent management styles - not matching with objectives Lack of growth opportunities, mainly financial Lack of job security How to improve Morale:

One has to determine the cause of low morale and deal with it and not the symptoms. If you catch frequent colds, taking medicines alone is not enough. A good doctor will recognize lack of resistance in the body and will prescribe a lot of Vitamin C based food.

Similarly, one has to go at the root cause of the problem.

Communicate and keep people well informed.

Be affable and approachable.

Be receptive to ideas and give credit for the same to the concerned people.

Clarify doubts as soon as possible.

Provide training regularly Use meetings profitably and make sure there is a purpose behind it and all concerned are aware of it.

When one takes on any new assignment, low morale in the organization is indicated by the symptoms mentioned above. One cannot assume that people need to be motivated, straightaway, without studying the situation. Morale and Motivation depend upon the quality of leadership. Most often, people and their negative attitudes are blamed for poor morale, when it is the poor leadership that is responsible for it. Negative attitudes are caused by frustration in people. An important fact that is often ignored and not mentioned by many behavioral scientists is that the leadership must be fair to people. Most employees realize that every employer has limitations in terms of recognition, challenges and money. It is the lack of fairness in treating people that leads to frustration and low morale in organizations. When people talk of good treatment, they mean fair treatment. If you are a leader or an entrepreneur, make sure you are fair and consistent in treating people and bulk of the problems will disappear.
