Be Your Best By Copying The Best

Some of you know I work with one of the UK's leading Confidence Coaches Peter Nicholas.

Just Pretend...

One technique that Peter uses to give yourself an instant boost of confidence, is 'pretend to be someone who is already successful'. So if you wanted to improve your tennis, pretend to be Roger Federer. If you wanted to improve your presentation skills, pretend to be Anthony Robbins.

I remember a time when a large corporate contacted me to host and facilitate a conference for 2000 staff. I asked Peter for some advice. The first thing we did was the exercise above. Who did I want to be? Bush? Clinton? Branson? Trump?

Never Heard of Him...

I wanted to be like Steve McDermott. Who?

You know the person who wrote 'How to be a complete and utter failure in life, work and everything'.

I saw him a few years earlier and he was brilliant. Funny, inspirational and down to earth. Just like I wanted to be.

So Peter said, “I need to study him”. “What does Steve do which I admire?”.

So I purchased a couple of audios that featured Steve. I listened to the material, stole a couple of the jokes and practised the pauses.

I Shall Film You

Peter then asked me to practise the hosting in front of him! He filmed me! Before I started he said 'pretend to be Steve'. I did. It was hard to 'host' in front of one person in a hotel room.

The outcome was OK.

We looked through the film recording. We discussed improvements. I practised for the second and third times.

I continually reviewed Steve and the filming of me. I tweaked my 'opening' a little more. I had a strong 'closing'. I was ready.

The outcome: the conference was excellent, I received fabulous feedback. It was followed up by another booking.

So find your role model in the activity you want to improve, study them, watch them closely and see yourself as them.

Have a different role model per activity you want to improve.

Try it with one activity just to get started. Your confidence will rise.

If you copyright or register a trademark for your work your case will be a slam dunk. Don't be afraid to go toe to toe with a thief. I have been amazed at how fast people will back off when they realize they are dealing with someone that understands their rights. True the patent office is nothing more than a place of registry and does not enforce the law. Times and attitudes change I recommend you watch "Flash of Genius" Fifty years ago if you said America will have a black President people would have laughed you out of the room

If someone copies you patented item, but changes one or two details on it, can you still claim that they have stolen your patent? MichelleJ
