Building Personal Courage and Resilience

The word courage means to be able to face fears with ones head held high. It is not the absence of fear that defines us as being brave. It is true that people experience fear every day and that it can be so strong that it paralyses them. We are allowed to feel these things. In fact, it's good that we do. It would mean we wouldn't be human if we didn't feel emotions, especially fear. Showing that we can face and overcome fear does not require us to sacrifice our lives. In fact, all people have the makings of being a real hero and in their own little way can show that they are willing to face all the trials that life throws in their way.

The opportunity to be courageous is inside everybody and all are given many opportunities to practice this. We often try to do everything possible to avoid these uncomfortable situations. We get particularly scared of the unknown and of the possibility that we will lose. We often can't help but avoid the unknown.

In times like these it's good to know that there are things around that can help. Everybody has the innate ability to summons all available strengths and stand their ground.

Here are a few tips to help us along the way:

Find out exactly what we are fearing. Fears can distort our view of the situation and we could end up being scared of something that is just an illusion. To help us through our fears we know we have someone to lean on. Pray for help and ask people in your lives to help you through your ordeal, no matter how big or small.

Your insecurities may make you think that a situation is insurmountable. Facing up to challenges is the best way to overcome them. People will help too. However, that does not mean we can abdicate responsibility. It just means we have somebody to lean on.

Find out where our boundaries are and where our comfort zone ends. Confronting a situation requires us to face the risks involved. Sometimes we need to let go of our comfort zone and venture into the unknown. The more we confront the fear, the easier it becomes to know what to do. There will always be risks and threats around us. Not facing up to them could be detrimental to our life. What will make us stronger is to be able to face fear and to be able to try again even if we have failed.

Face life with optimism. There are some things beyond our control. Accept this and change the way we respond to these situations. Instead of allowing them to get us down, we need to see how we can make them work in our favour. This is not easy and requires practice. Being able to alter our attitude allows us to understand that life does not throw us problems that we can't handle.

Courage and resilience go hand in hand. It contributes to our experiencing healthy growth. Nature allows us to adapt to our challenges. It is up to us to discover how to use them.
