Here Is A Method That Is Helping New Managers To Gain More Time
How many times have you heard individuals say, “I don’t have time to do that” Hundreds? I meet people everyday who say, “I don’t have time to…
‘write that report’
‘have discussions with my staff’
‘take on anything else’
‘play golf’
‘cut the grass’
‘wash the car’
You hear it all the time, don’t you? I bet you say it. I know I do sometimes.
Well, in my experience and in the majority of cases, it is not “I don’t have time”, it is more like “it’s not a priority”, “I would rather do this instead”, or they do not have the passion for the task.
Let me share a story.
Our family dog, Sam is now an 11-year-old Border Collie who we have had since he was 6 weeks old and he is like a member of the family. Everybody who meets him loves him. He is so gentle and intelligent and he loves learning new words and tricks.
This year has been a rather eventful year, for Sam. Back in February, he was diagnosed diabetic, so Sam now has to be injected twice a day with insulin for the rest of his life. This is not a problem, but we had to get his sugar levels down otherwise he may go blind. We were told diabetes is very hard to control and boy were they right! Not only do we have to inject him twice daily, he has to have his food every 12 hours and he has to have walks every 12 hours. Diabetes is controlled by diet, insulin and exercise and you have to get all three of these in balance to reduce the sugar levels. The vet said it could take months and it did and unfortunately, Sam did go blind. He has coped well though, as his other senses have taken over.
Then in June, he had an operation to overcome his blindness and see again. The vet was over 50 miles away, so my wife and I were making this trip twice a week, for several weeks. Since then, so much more has happened to Sam. He ate a tennis ball, (silly boy) only a few weeks ago, giving us a real scare and he had to go to the vet, for scans and have his heart monitored. In the end he was fine, no problems. Again, he was a priority so it did not matter how much time we spent looking after him.
So why am I telling you all this. Well we found the time to cater for Sam. He was a priority and we were passionate about making him well again.
I still ran my business, alongside finding time for Sam. I just worked longer into the evenings. I love my business and I will always find time to run it, I just might not have time ‘to cut the grass’ (I loath cutting the grass by the way; it is not a passion and I always find something else to do!!).
So next time you hear yourself saying “I don’t have time” it might be because you are not passionate about what you have to do or you have other priorities. If you are passionate, you will find the time.
