DO SOMETHING!
If you sit around devising elegant and complex strategies and then
try to execute them through a series of flawless decisions – you’re
doomed!
It won’t be because the strategies are necessarily
incorrect but because the organization is hesitating, failing to take
decisive action and make things that are supposed to happen, happen.
Leaders,
managers and organizations can become immobilized by perfectionism,
fear, anxiety and the result…….very little actually gets done. What
must be instilled within the organization is a “can do” spirit with the
supporting structure, systems and processes that reinforces the notion
that with enough creativity and determination the organization can
accomplish the mission and achieve the desired results even if the
strategy and the execution is not perfect. The very act of doing
something creates momentum and with a focus on achieving small
incremental wins the organization will mobilize itself for eventual
success.
Lack of confidence throughout an organization
immobilizes and discourages enthusiasm and energy, creating
bottle-necks and self-imposed obstacles. Paradoxically, this lack of
confidence can manifest into a focus on activity over results,
diverting energy from the important tasks and wasting time and
resources with little being accomplished. So there is a caveat here;
“do something” and ensure that it creates value and drives to and
contributes to the accomplishment of the desired results and mission.
To create that burning desire to win and do something, leaders must –
Set a personal example
- Mobilize and engage the energy of the organization through constant communication
- Be visible
- Provide assurance, direction and support
- Monitor the conditions and progress
- Design the organizational structure to facilitate the company’s key processes
- Establish the management processes for identifying and overcoming barriers and obstacles
- Put in controls that flag deviations to desired performance and results
- Re-organize human resource management and systems for selection, reward, development and motivation
- Embed employee education programs and training to create valuable contributors that can adapt to change and adopt improvement initiatives
What is the long term vision for the organization?
What are the key opportunities for action?
What are the concrete things that can be undertaken to create a sense of momentum and forward movement?
What are the structures and processes that must be created as support systems and to provide a sense of stability?
What are the short-term milestones?
How will the energy and talents of the organization be mobilized?
What is being done to ensure the visibility of the leaders?
Never lose sight of the ultimate goal, focus energy on short-term wins and most importantly……… DO SOMETHING!
