Don't Support Outdated Rules

Ease Up On The Business Buzzwords Please - By Andrew Bailey

Every organization has it's rules and regulations but depending on the age of your company, some may be as old hat as an audio cassette. What worked years ago may not work today. As a progressive manager, you may need to change a few things such as: 1. An old rule was: Avoid any conflict at all costs.

The new rule should be: Rock the boat at all costs. That's not to say that you create conflict where there isn't any but sometimes you have to create a controlled conflict to initiate a change. Meaning, you talk about an issue openly.

2. An old rule was: tell employees what to do and when to do it.

The new rule should be: Let them do their jobs by giving them all the support, tools and resources they need. The last thing you want to do is hold an employees hand all the time and baby them. Encourage them and support them and let them do things their own way as long as it brings the desired results.

3. the old rule was: Strive at all costs to maintain the status quo.

The new rule should be: Strive at all costs to create change. As they say, a change is as good as a holiday. Be proactive and not reactive. If you do that then you wont let others tell you how to play the game.

Off course there are certain rules you wont want to mess with but if they're not serving you well, it's time to change them for the better.
