Is Personal and Business Coaching Alive in Ireland?
Written by: Richard CaseyArticle Overview: A common concern amongst Coaches in the current climate is the lack of data outlining whether or not people are looking for Coaching. If people are looking for Coaches; what type and where? Unfortunately, there is no empirical data to suggest whether or not the coaching industry is growing or if coaching is being embraced by the Irish public and businesses.

Is Personal and Business Coaching Alive in Ireland?
To try and shed some light on this, Irish Coaching Solutions turned one of the most useful data sources available to us today: Google. We used the Google applications to complete an analysis of searches for Coaching and Coaching related keywords. This article outlines some of the major findings with some surprising results.
The methodology used was firstly to identify a number of coaching keywords that people would use to search for coaches. We started with the basics, Life Coaching, Business Coaching, Executive Coaching, Career Coaching and Coaching Training. Based on the initial results we then expanded this search when additional relevant keywords were found. On completion of our list we merged the findings of similar keywords into groups (Life, Career, Executive etc) and the completed a tally for the Month of October under the four head headings outlined above. We then compared the same results to the Month of May. This gave us an overall picture of what people were searching for when they were looking for coaching on Google.
So what were the findings?
In a review of the searches on Google for the month of October there were 13,989 searches for Coaching related terms. Life coaching was the top search area with 6790 related searches. Life Coaching was searched for approximately 3.5 times more that than the next type, Business Coaching (1896) and 5 times that of Executive Coaching (1293). Coming in fourth in our analysis was Career Coaching (882) which was searched for 8 times less than Life Coaching.
In comparison to May, Life Coaching and Executive Coaching was searched for 7% and 12% respectively more in October, while Business and Career Coaching were down 14% and 5% respectively.
For Coaching Training we saw a 6% increase in the number of searches for Coaching Training (2948) of all descriptions with the highest increase being seen in people searching for Life Coaching Courses.
So what does this data tell us? In the authors opinion the data tells us the following.
Using the data fromIrish Coaching solutions websitewe know that for every 2 visits we receive this equates to approx 1 unique visitor so we have a 50% search to visitor ratio. In essence, this means each person visits the site twice a month. Applying the same criteria to the number of searches outlined above this would approximate to 6995 people searching for coaching in the country of Ireland. Also, as we tend to visit our own websites and that the Coaching Alliance state that there are approx 1,000 coaches in Ireland lets remove 1,000 from the number and agree that approx 5,995 people searched for Coaching in Ireland in October.
Why are most people searching for life coaching and significantly less people for Executive and Business Coaching? The answer could be that in a recession people need more help in their overall lives rather than in specific areas. Or it could be that people do not know of the different types of Coaching available to them.
One thing that is clear is that these numbers could be significantly higher. In a time when the country is in recession, people are loosing their jobs, businesses are closing and executives need to become smarter and more efficient, the need for coaching has never been higher. One has to wonder if we are doing a good job in the coaching industry or promoting the type of coaching that is out there? It is the opinion of this author that we need to step up our campaign of exposure and let more people know what coaching is about!
