Article Overview: Most trainers start their career in technical roles. After all, before they become confident to teach others, they need to know the topic they want to teach inside out. Learning something deeply takes years and requires a lot of persistence. Eventually, a technical person may decide that it is time to start transferring that knowledge to others. This is where training and knowing how to train others comes into equation. We all know that someone can be very good at what they do but might not be good at telling you how they do it. On the other hand, some people are very good at explaining everything in simple terms, even though they are not world famous in their technical field.

Most trainers start their career in technical roles.

As with all skills, this can be mastered and learned with practice. Learning how to train others is a soft skill. Like all skills, learning how to train others is no exception. To start with, a technical person should simply reflect back on how they were thought in the past. Years of formal education and training usually helps people to understand what works and what doesn’t. Everyone can recall their worst and best teachers. Here is an opportunity to reflect back and learn from the professionals.

Next, you need to learn about new trends, methodologies and discoveries in the field of training. Reading relevant books can significantly help. However, just reading is not enough and you need to start putting these new skills into practice. It is only when you apply new technique that you start to fully understand them.

This is where train the trainer courses come handy. Attending one can quickly get you up and running on the art of training delivery. In these courses, delegates usually get to practice delivering a section to others to receive feedback on it. The feedback from the trainer or other delegates in turn helps to improve the delivery. Since the environment is safe, you can experiment with a variety of techniques and fully understand why certain methods such as accelerated learning and question/answer work better than others.

This can be taken one step further. Train the trainer training materials allow human resources and organisations to setup train the trainer courses for their technical staff. Using these courses, technical staff can get trained on how to teach others and pass on their knowledge. This is an incredibly affordable and practical way of training staff and leads to immediate results.

For example, train the trainer training materials (see links in the profile) come complete with workbooks, instructions, slides and exercises that allow a trainer to quickly use the content to teach delegates on the art of training delivery. Trainer script has instructions on best practices, background academic information, pacing, common issues, bad techniques and so on.

In addition, since the train the trainer training materials mentioned in this article are editable, an organisation can easily modify the content and add their own specific material based on their technical or legal requirements.

Recent research shows that despite all the advances in the field of training, many trainers are still using traditional lecture-based methods which are shown to be ineffective. This suggests that even experienced trainers can still benefit from such courses.

Whatever the course material, pre and post analysis is critical to make sure that the delegates receive the intended training and that they become better in their respective fields.

Budget. Budget. - I believe the biggest barrier is related to budget. Training tends to be a normal practice for a big company. But I have to consider it seriously as an entrepreneur.
Marketing vs Web Optimizers vs Usability Marketing vs Web Optimizers vs Usability - Hi BigJim22, I must be honest - I haven't really read a lot of Seth's articles on web site strategies. What I have found though is that there always seems to be a three way conflict between marketing ideas, SEO strategies and usability issues when doing web development. The secret is to balance between the ideal situation for each of these. Since a website needs to be found, visited and acted upon we need a strong combination of marketing, SEO and usability to be successful. It's something we struggle with constantly at Last Minute Training and I'm sad to say - we still haven't found the right combination.
Re: Feedback on a New Company Name Re: Feedback on a New Company Name - [quote="litekepr":1krjv27f]Not talking about a domain name. The sites I use to promote the tour business are already established. The idea is to have a name which includes what I do with that division of my business - it needs to be more personalized and professional instead just saying I'm Nikki and I coordinate tours. The SEO stuff is being taken care of on sites and blogs and other avenues. Anyway, I'm getting a lot of great feedback about the name and the search engines bringing up new posts and many older posts by me and about me that all point to my sites. Interesting perk I hadn't thought about. Shri[/quote:1krjv27f] Hi Shri, While I kind of see where you're coming from... but if the name is too long or descriptive, chances are it won't be very catchy or easy to remember. For instance, there's a company in Toronto called "BizLaunch" and their tagline used to be "We Train Entrepreneurs" (so that people would immediately understand what their business and website does). I think they've now changed their tagline to "Where entrepreneurs start", but the point is that "BizLaunch" sounds a million times better than if they had named their business "We Train Entrepreneuers". I think with some work, you could easily brand the name of your business (whatever you end up choosing) with the nature of its activities.
