We have become so accustom to convince and doing the status quo that we use the same approach when hiring. However, we need to stop and take a different approach when hiring mid-level or top executives. Many times we just try and find people in the same industry instead of finding the best managers. It is more costly to put in a bad manager then it is to educate a good leader. Think outside the box and outside the industry if you don’t find what you are looking for – think good leaders first then skills later.

Mike Conwell received his undergraduate degree in Marketing from Marymount University in 1994. While attending school fulltime, Mike also worked fulltime selling scientific equipment to the Federal government and served in the U.S. Naval Reserve. While in the Navy, Mike served in Operation Desert Storm. After Mike finished his undergraduate degree he was hired by Shaw, Pittman, Posts and Trowbridge as the Installations Coordinator, supervising five technicians, two contractors, and managed over 700 pieces of hardware. Mike was promoted as the firm’s Document Management Administrator where he maintained all aspects of the Firm’s document management systems, databases and servers that supported that system. In 1996, Mike moved into consulting and was the Senior Systems Engineer for Netplex. He was promoted to Operations Manager and then to Business Unit Manager for the mid-Atlantic region. Mike had full P&L responsibility for Netplex’s consulting services in the mid-Atlantic. While working fulltime at Netplex, Mike obtained his Masters in Business Administration from Marymount University. After completing his MBA, Mike was recruited to KPMG Tax Knowledge Management Department where he was quickly promoted to Director/Senior Manager. While at KPMG, Mike received certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP). In 2004, Mike left KPMG to start his own consulting company and to be an independent consultant for executive and leadership consulting. He has since obtained his Six Sigma, Black Belt Certification, and focuses on rescuing projects and helping companies become more efficient.
