3 Common Causes of Corporate Strategy Misalignment

Guest post by: Joe Evans

Article Overview: A recent artcile on corporate strategy covered the symptoms of corporate strategy misalignment. As discussed, a properly aligned corporate strategy will align strategic goals with the operations and execution tactics necessary to fulfill the organization’s desired outcomes. With a well-aligned corporate strategy, the entire organization – both internally and externally – will move in the same clearly-defined direction. Left to its own devices, a strategy that is misaligned will result in operational initiatives that are out of sync with strategic goals, missions that drift operationally off course, and chaos that compounds into serious consequences. Now it’s time to consider the causes of corporate strategy misalignment.

3 Common Causes of Corporate Strategy Misalignment

A recent artcile on corporate strategy covered the symptoms of corporate strategy misalignment.

What Causes Corporate Strategy to Misalign?

There are numerous reasons for corporate strategy misalignment; however, below are three common causes we have come across in our corporate strategic planning work.

Common Cause #1: The Corporate Strategic Planning Process
The corporate strategic planning process is crucial to avoid strategy misalignment. After all, an organization cannot drive forward on vision alone. Instead, vision and goals must drive down into the organization through detailed planning and execution. That said, an immature or underdeveloped strategic planning process is one of the biggest causes of corporate strategy misalignment. What we see in an underdeveloped process is one that fails to adequately define plan goals that are concise and measurable and, importantly, these plans tend to lack detailed operational planning, meaningful communications, and necessary change management.

Common Cause #2: Strategic Plan Governance
Plan governance is where the rubber meets the road in terms of how the plan is managed through to execution. Plan governance ensures the plan goals are consistently measured and brought back in line quickly if the organization heads off course. Governance adds necessary accountability and empowerment throughout the organization. Without governance, strategy misalignment will almost certainly creep in. With it, the organization can be guided firmly away from strategic misalignment and toward the achievement of desired outcomes (strategic goals).

Common Cause #3: Communication of the Strategic Plan
A corporate strategic plan must include a communications strategy that addresses the strong need for the people who will be responsible for the plan’s success to know what it is they are expected to do and how their role fits into the overall strategy of the organization. Failure to communicate the plan nearly guarantees strategic misalignment down the road. The plan should define who needs to know, what and when they need to know, how they’ll be expected to execute on a given portion of the plan, and how communication will be maintained moving forward.
