Churchill on Clear Language

Winston Churchill, universally acknowledged as a champion of motivational speech, was an early proponent of Clear Language. The following anecdote from “The Wicked Wit of Winston Churchill” compiled by Dominique Enright makes the point.

When an American general asked Churchill to look over the draft of an address he had written it was returned with the comment “Too many passives and too many zeds.” The general asked what he meant and was told: “Too many Latinate polysyllabics like “systematize”, “prioritize” and “finalize”. And then the passives. What if I had said, instead of “We shall fight on the beaches”, “Hostilities will be engaged with our adversary on the coastal perimeter”?

The Osborne Group Principals offer Clear Language training that brings the battle against passives and zeds right to your office.

Re: Recommendations for going Wireless Re: Recommendations for going Wireless - There is one that has popped up in the past couple years called Clear. I had even considered becoming a local distributor, but decided against it since there was enough competition in my area already. Might want to check into that GT.
Re: Does Your Blog Reach Business People? Re: Does Your Blog Reach Business People? - It's interesting what names people choose to keep... If I'd been named "Winton" Churchill I'd've changed it! But perhaps he gets a lot of publicity because of the similalarity of names. Similar to John Edwards of that Ghost Whisperer show... I confess I always got him confused with the politician!
Re: Bounce! by Barry Moltz Re: Bounce! by Barry Moltz - Hi, Good, we need people with guts to go on, irrespective of their experiences. Sir Winston Churchill said the following: NEVER, NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP! This concept of positive thinking will never loose its power. It creates a strong mentality to cope with alll sorts of situations. Think of all the disaster areas in the world, but a strong tenacity to pursue life to the end carries a lot of guts. Any other ideas?

Sleep needs Sleep needs - [quote:2fxfspfi]Military does that to you it seems, and it sticks with you lol.[/quote:2fxfspfi] I wish I only needed to sleep 4-6 hours a day. Heck, I wish I didn't have to sleep at all. I could accomplish so much more that way. I know Winston Churchill is famous for not sleeping much, especiallly during WWII, but I believe he took catnaps during the day... Which would never work for me... For myself, though, I need 8 hours a day at least. If I deprive myself of that it catches up to me and makes me sick... Supposedly they've done studies that kids don't get enough sleep, and there's plans afoot to move school times to later so they don't have to get up so early.... (I may be out of touch on that development as I have no kids and don't know if it ever went into effect...)
