What’s the difference between a “consultant” and a “contract executive”?
As an independent contractor, I’ve
certainly done some work that could be called “consulting”. I don’t find this
work nearly as rewarding as I do that of being a “contract executive”. As a
consultant, you ask a lot of questions, pour over documents, observe processes,
etc. and advise the client on what they should be doing to improve their
situation, or whatever it is that they are trying to do. But you never get to
see if they actually follow your advice and if it is really working for them.
It’s a pretty arms-length relationship.
As a contract executive, you become part of
the client organization. You are there to help the client do what they want and
need to get done. You interact with various people in the organization, you
help with decision making, you move things along, and you often get to be part
of the solution and celebration of the results. It is just a professional a
relationship, but much more rewarding because you play a more critical role in
the client’s success.
