Yesterday I attended a half-day seminar for the ICT (Information Communications Technology) sector at the Information Industries Bureau in Brisbane. The presenter was Margaret Brown, a Partner at the national firm Minter Ellison Lawyers. Margaret spoke about how to select and engage a partner for business development (such as in an alliance or partnering arrangement).

Part of this topic was to address what exactly you would want from a “partner”.

It could be any of the following:

Sales leads
License sales, or account sales
Ability to do installations, implementation, training, or support
Collect revenue for support/maintenance
Focus on a geographic area, or an industry vertical
To grow with your business into new markets
To provide references, case studies, white papers, testimonials
To promote follow-on sales, upgrades, additional services

Although the list above is skewed towards technology-oriented businesses, the same thing applies when you consider marketing for your business (any business – not just technology).

Before you can make sensible marketing decisions, be clear about what you are really trying to achieve with your marketing.

The business outcomes you might target from your marketing might be one or more of:

More new clients
Extra sales from existing clients
A greater number of referrers
Increased revenue from previous client base (repeat business; new services)
Increasing the ‘average sale’ value
Additional enquiries via your web site
Increased awareness amongst key client groups
Attracting interest from potential joint venture partners
Introduce new services
Gain registrations for a workshop or seminar you are running
Sell a specific “package” of services
Shortening the decision cycle (making faster buying decisions)

Do you need a marketing schedule to plan a full 12-months of marketing activity?

From experience I know the best results come from achieving synergy between business objectives and marketing outcomes. The time taken to clarify what you want from marketing will be worth it. Less wastage. Less frustration. Better results.

Lesson learned for me. We're back to the drawing board with the list owner more involved in the development of the letter and emails. I should have known better being a Business Analyst in my day job that you never leave the end-user out. So Evan we haven't had the opportunity to test any of it yet but it's been a fun process for me to stand back and look at.

Re: How many mambers of this forum are also member of WF? Re: How many mambers of this forum are also member of WF? - Hi Kevin, I have to agree with Tanny. All forums are unique in their own way, but doesn't mean that one is better than the other. What you might get out of one forum, you may not get from another. For instance, the WF focuses on Internet Marketing, while this forum focuses on Entrepreneurship. Each has their own set of benefits. I don't think you can really compare one to the other, unless of course they focused on the same topic. I have learned a lot from this forum, stuff I would never have gotten from the WF. With that being said, I've learned a lot from the WF, specifically since I need to know about Internet Marketing and running an online business. The addition of the Online Business forum here will help, and Jeff is doing a great job as moderator.
