Some entrepreneurs choose to go it alone, but for those who have desire – and the budget – to get help when it comes to promoting your company, there are some things you need to be aware of. Selecting the right marketing agency for you, the one that will fit with your company can be a difficult process, but it is one which merits the time it takes. After all, you wouldn’t get into bed with just anybody, and so neither should you trust your company with just any firm.
The right firm could make the difference between your becoming a Fortune 500 company and becoming the next in the long list of companies that fail after their first five years. So, how do you know which one will take you to the top?
The first thing you need to look for when shopping around is look for experience. Experience, experience, experience! There is a reason why some of these firms have lasted so long while others have crashed and burned. Check out what kind of businesses these firms have represented over the years (and make sure they have, in fact, been in business for years). Will this firm be familiar with your industry or your business? Have they worked with any of your competitors before? Do they have a solid reputation? Will they be around tomorrow?
Once you have a narrowed down list of the top firms you think you could work with, approach them for further information. Check out their references. Any reputable marketing agency should be more than willing to put you in touch with its previous clients. If they hesitate, you should be suspicious. Either they are not legitimate businesses, or their previous clients were not happy with their work. Either way, you should steer clear.
After checking references and narrowing your list even further, then is the time to take a realistic look at your budget and the prices of the different firms. Do the firms’ services fall into your price range, and will they be sure to stay within that budget? Compare the firms on your list, keeping in mind, however, that going with the cheapest is not always the best idea. Sometimes, you really do pay for what you get.
Finally, engage in more lengthy discussions with company executives to see what some of their proposed ideas would be for your own business. Do they run along the same lines as your own? Will your company be adequately represented according to what you currently have in mind? You don’t want to come across any surprises farther on down the road.
Also, keep in mind that if the marketing agency you select also works with your competitors, you may be at an advantage in that they will know the industry. However, you need to make sure that your campaign will be unique and none of the ideas from their previous clients will be recycled. After all, you want to be able to stand out from the crowd.
