An online bestseller book launch is only as good as the book

As an author you have some amazing opportunities if you know how to optimize your position. Beyond being an author is to become a bestselling author. There are many lists that one can make it on to become a bestseller. One of the ways I really enjoy and recommend to my clients is to utilize what the Internet has to offer to get you to the top of the two top online bookstores.

There are occasions where an online bestselling campaign can be the impetus for a book to become visible in such a way as to be picked up by a foreign publisher, major U.S. publisher, agents and publicists. However, don't expect this to happen with each and every book that is launched through an online campaign.

Although virtually any book could become an online bestseller, if the book is not a stellar book you may actually be setting yourself up for a huge failure. What I mean by this is after the fact of the campaign; people will view a poorly written, edited and published book as representative of you and your quality of work; which it is.

Avoid the urge to do an online book launch thinking you can throw together a poor quality book , become an online bestseller and suddenly you are discovered, end up on Oprah and live happily ever after. It doesn't work this way.

I recall one author who was convinced that her "journal" book could do well in a campaign. She wanted me to be a Joint Venture partner by contributing a bonus gift and helping her to promote her book on a specific day.

I asked her to send me a copy of her journal book in order to determine if this was a viable book to promote. Upon receiving the "book" I immediately saw that this was not going to do well. It was a spiral bound book consisting of about 80 blank pages with the same small design on each page and a cover that looked like a child had used clip art to design it. Not much more was in the book other than a poorly written bio of the author.

Sure, she may have sold lots of books in a campaign, but the fact was she would have lost a lot of credibility from those who purchased the $20 item. It was not worth more than a few dollars at best and had no real sustaining value.

So make sure you have a great book, topic of interest, visionary marketing plan and a well executed campaign. With these elements you can create incredible opportunities for yourself, your book and your business.

Re: What Evan's Reading: Enchantment by Guy Kawasaki Re: What Evan's Reading: Enchantment by Guy Kawasaki - Evan, this is an excellent book! I had a fortune to meet with the author (and he signed a copy of the book for me!) and ask him a question or two about the book. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to understand how to position him- or herself better. Thanks!
Re: Kevin's Case Study #7 - How do you promote your new book? Re: Kevin's Case Study #7 - How do you promote your new book? - When I started my The Thunder Child science fiction webzine, I waited a couple of months til I had some decent content, then I started emailing publishers and various authors asking for review copies of their books...and they sent 'em along with no trouble. Well... I'd say my success rate was about 85%. I'd do the reviews, and be honest about the book... thankfully only once did I receive a book that really stank on ice and that I had to pan. I once asked a new author for a review copy, and he sent me the book and a check - which I returned, as I don't think anyone should have to pay to have their book reviewed! Now I'm on a media list for a major sf publisher, and get a few books out of the blue from self-published authors...and in those cases I review the book if I can..but if I haven't requested a book I don't feel an obligation to review it... and self-published fiction books are, for the most part...not very good.
Re: Kevin's Case Study #7 - How do you promote your new book? Re: Kevin's Case Study #7 - How do you promote your new book? - [quote="BuzzAroundBooks":ui76e1nl]How do you promote your new self-help or business book? What kind of marketing budget should you set? And which online strategy has the highest conversion rate? Thanks[/quote:ui76e1nl] It's hard to add anything to what Shri has said, as she's the pro at it! I do have more questions though. Is this new book self-published, or is it published through a larger publisher - if so, it's they're responsibility to do the promoting! If you're self-publishing, than of course you've got to do it all yourself. Perhaps try putting a trailer or a webinar about the book up on YouTube?
Re: Books for Business Owners Re: Books for Business Owners - Hi DougSchadle, Thanks for sharing your favorite business book with us! A good book I'm reading now is "Maximum Achievement: Strategies and Skills That Will Unlock Your Hidden Powers to Succeed" by Brian Tracy as it was a birthday gift from a friend. Tracy's book is helpful in identifying what's important in your life and then setting an action plan to achieve it.
Re: Good Adwords Books? Re: Good Adwords Books? - Thanks, I'll check that out. Perry Marshall writes the foreword on the book I've got, so I guess that itself is a good recommendation for the book.
