Most online job and business opportunities are bogus!

"Currently there's a 54-to-1 scam ratio among work-at-home job leads on the Internet," said Staffcentrix co-founder, Christine Durst, who screens up to 5,000 online job offers every week and rates them on her Web site.

"That means that for every 55 [work-at-home] job leads that you find on the Internet, 54 of them are going to be outright scams or downright suspicious," warns Durst.

Not only is this true for home based job opportunities, it is true for those home based business opportunities; those claiming you can make boatloads of money with little, if any effort and simply "with the press of a button."

The problem is growing in epic proportions, especially in light of the current economic situation. Otherwise cautious people are being sucked into situations that give the promise of financial security. Sadly many people lose time and money to many of these "too good to be true" opportunities. Some lose a few dollars while others lose thousands.

This is not to discourage you from pursuing your dream of working at home. However, it is to encourage you to avoid jumping into a situation without doing your homework.

Before believing testimonials, guarantees, amazing earning potentials, etc., research whatever it is you are thinking of doing.

If you have to send money for a job opportunity - BEWARE! If you don't know anything about the company that promises you only have to work a few hours a week and make thousands upon thousands of dollars - BEWARE!
Does this mean there are no legitimate and lucrative opportunities? Absolutely not. What it does mean is keep a level head about any offer you find.

Here are a few steps you can take to minimize being taken advantage of:

Check out the people behind the offer. Dig deep to see if there are complaints against the company you are considering working for. A Google search can be a first step.

Avoid any opportunities where you cannot easily get in touch with someone from the company. Even when you do get in touch, realize there are ways to make things appear legit.

If the offer appears too good to be true it likely is.

If there are promises that you need no experience at all and you can lay on the beach while raking in the money, avoid this like the plague.

Give yourself a cooling off period. If you have a feeling in the pit of your stomach indicating this is not a good choice for you, trust that feeling. A feeling like this is likely the best indicator.

For those of us that offer legitimate opportunities, we welcome inquiries. We also will be the first to say, "Yes, you can make great money working from home, but you will have to actually work at whatever business or job you are planning on doing."

Remember this , "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Re: Does birth order influence the desire to start a business? Re: Does birth order influence the desire to start a business? - I think this study is bogus. I don't think birth order influences any of this. It's the nature vs nurture argument magnified. Some is nature, but most is nurtured through child development and adolescence. Birth order has nothing to do with it.
Re: Affiliate Marketing - Open for Discussion Re: Affiliate Marketing - Open for Discussion - Carol, Mary and David - thanks for your great input and insight on Affiliate Marketing! This is the kind of discussion I was hoping for in this thread. There are pros and cons to Affiliate Marketing, just as there are to any business. As has been suggested, he best policy is to proceed with caution and do some research before jumping in. As Carol has recommended, this topic thread in the EvanCarmichael.com forum is the ideal place to ask questions and seek further input on available Affiliate Marketing programs. If a person is serious about building an online business and is interested in Affiliate Marketing plans, they should approach the process as they would any other form of business. Research, ask questions, compare opportunities, participate in forums on online business and Affiliate Marketing. GT :-]
How can you distinguish real from fake opportunities? How can you distinguish real from fake opportunities? - No one wants to be scammed, so if you're a new online marketer, how can you distinguish real from fake opportunities to earn money? What are some key signs that it's a scam?
Re: How do you maximize your time at business/networking events? Re: How do you maximize your time at business/networking events? - Hi Kevin, Personally I don't do any speaking, but I think this question can fit other niches too. I am easily distracted, especially if I am not in the mood for work, and working online makes it even harder. I set myself a list of monthly goals that i want to achieve and then every week I set the task for everyday. For most tasks I have a time limit, and I keep those with no time to the end and let myself go wild. I think that in any business it is important to meet new people. New people means, new ideas, new opportunities and of course new exposure.
Online vs. Offline Marketing Online vs. Offline Marketing - I think it really depends on your business model. For example, for my company I do mostly online marketing. It's the most cost effective way to create awareness and I have a way to monetize the traffic. It's hard to run a website based business without online marketing. I have done some offline marketing in the form of media interviews, seminars, conferences, etc. but the results pale in comparison to what I can generate online. There are also many successful offline businesses that don't use any online marketing efforts. Depending on your business model sometimes referrals are the best way to grow as supposed to web marketing. I think it's hard to find a business that could not benefit from both online and marketing efforts but depending on your business model (and the personality of the owner) most entrepreneurs typically skew towards one over the other.
