How startup businesses sabotage their success

I work with many startup companies and I see the mistakes they make that sabotage their businesses every single day. Here is a list of the top 5 mistakes:

1. Spending all their money on product development and having very little or no money for marketing. Without marketing, you cannot get customers. Without customers you cannot sell products/services and earn money.

2. No business or marketing planning on how to select and serve a niche market. The norm seems to be "ready fire aim" with no idea of whom to market to and why.

3. Seeing marketing as an expense instead of an investment. Marketing is the most lucrative investment platform in the world and businesses that see marketing as an investment in building their business will succeed.

4. Not understanding how to make a sale. Strong sales skills are incredibly important in running a business. Without understanding how to sell, it is difficult to make money.

5. Trying to compete on low price instead of on quality and service. There is a large market of people who are willing to pay more for better quality and service.

Would you risk your house for your business? Would you risk your house for your business? - For many new entrepreneurs finding startup capital can be a real challenge. The potential investors / lenders that you talk to don't understand your industry and miss the opportunities. Meanwhile banks are not typically very startup friendly. Starting a new business does require a lot of time, energy, and sacrifice. I'm curious as to how much you would put on the line for your business. If you needed the money would you put up your house as equity for a loan from the bank?
Young electrical engineer Young electrical engineer - I am 24. Have a degree in Electrical Engineering and have worked in various engineering positions, also pursuing my MBA at the moment. I have run several successful businesses in the past; the largest being a regional advertising and promotions company, Mad Entertainment, LLC. Currently I am involved in a new startup, Moody Inc., which will be offering a first of it's kind product in a multi-billion dollar industry (officially opening in 3 weeks).
Re: Did you buy into the iPhone 3G craze? Re: Did you buy into the iPhone 3G craze? - Well for one the MAC is way faster... even after having it for the last 6 months it hasn't slowed down. especially during startup. My PC started slowing down it's startup within 3 months. you'll find there are not a lot of programs out there for the MAC but I'm increasingly finding that most of the programs I use for business are available as online versions of the product and are typically platform independent - so no worries there. I like the feel of the MAC and the way the fonts and graphics look on it. OH, the battery life is amazing even after 6 months I'll typically get a consistent 4 hours from it.
How long before a bank would touch you? How long before a bank would touch you? - Most banks here don't want to lend money to startup businesses because they are risky and have a higher default rate. Unless you provide some kind of personal collateral or have a good personal credit history, banks usually like to see 2 years of business experience before they give you a loan. What has your experience been?
what position to request? what position to request? - I work full time as a software developer and I am kind a tired of this because it's impossible to make a career here. I am also helping a small web startup part time with technical things, and also with some design, concept and marketing.. there are only 3-4 people in this startup and I do it without any money in hope that it will became google #2 in the future LOL. So.. since I am doing this for free I want to have a fancy position that I can mention in my resume or linkedin profile. The question is what should it be? Something like Architect? Cofounder? VP? Product manager?
