How to start a home based business
Here is my advice for starting a home business or a small business:
1. Stay away from Internet "get rich overnight" programs that are marketed all over the Internet. The only people making money off of these programs are the ones selling them. If you want to start a home based business, do your homework and buy quality bookstore books on how to start a home based business and subscribe to the magazines "Home Office Computing" and "Entrepreneur."
2. Understand that starting a business is a financial risk and 80% of all new businesses go out of business within 5-years. So before you decide to start a business, you need to decide if you can financially survive if your business fails because the odds are stacked against you.
3. If you do decide to start a small business, get into something you really enjoy. Magazines like "Entrepreneur" will show you many different types of small businesses you can get started in and that include educational manuals that guide you every step of the way from starting your business to how to market it and handle operations.
4. One of the best types of home businesses is to become a consultant in an area you have expert knowledge. Opening a consulting business out of your home is quite inexpensive as your main expense is marketing. And, the great news about marketing your consulting services is you can start on a very small scale using a direct marketing tool such as sales letters and/or postcards, sending out a few hundred each week or month. Also, there are many outstanding books on how to start a consulting business such as "Guerrilla Marketing for Consultants" by Jay Conrad Levinson and Michael W. McLaughlin.
