Seek and ye shall find – the right information
I recently tried contacting three entrepreneurs to seek their advice about business-related matters. Two of these entrepreneurs started companies that have grown to more than $100 million in annual sales. The other is an expert in new media.
These are superstar entrepreneurs. They write articles in leading business magazines and are often quoted in the press. Their names pop up all over the place on Google.
For one reason or another, none of these entrepreneurs returned my emails. Oh well – such is life.
There’s more than one way to slay this dragon, I thought. These superstars don’t own a copyright on good information.
Libraries are stacked with the latest business books. The Internet is teeming with articles, blogs, interviews and research papers on any subject imaginable. And it’s all free.
One of the useful sources I found was a blog written by Mark Cuban, the wealthy, outspoken owner of the Dallas Mavericks. Cuban is a born go-getter, and entrepreneurs can learn a lot by studying what he has to say.
For instance, an important ingredient in Cuban’s success is his ability to read voraciously about his industry. He reads everything he can get his hands on and becomes an expert in his field. (No; Cuban isn’t one of the entrepreneurs I tried to contact).
Operating a successful business requires knowing where to find the right information. It’s great to solicit feedback from a superstar entrepreneur. But it’s not essential to your success.
The information you’re looking for is all around you. It’s on the Internet. It’s in business groups. It’s at your Chamber of Commerce. You might even contact people you already know – most successful people are more than willing to share the secrets of their success, if asked.
