The Future According To Augmented Reality

Many of us grew up with TV shows such as The Bionic Woman where ordinary people were given ‘super' powers via special implants. This kind of imagining is now very close to reality. Augmented reality (AR) is literally changing how we view the world and how the world can interact with us. A taste of what is already and what is just around the corner includes massive transformations in every area of our lives from grocery shopping to education and health care ... According to Babak Parvis from The University of Washington in Seattle, the technology and capacity for bionic eyes already exists. It's just a matter of timing now for companies to start developing the technology in a serious way for the commercial market. Just search YouTube for Bionic Contact Lenses by Sciencentral to watch abrief video, in which Parvis outlines the fundamentals of Bionic Contact Lenses.

Applications for a bionic contact lens range from enhanced leisure activities (where the lens would act as a special camera, telescope or even night goggles) through to comprehensive health management (where doctors could monitor patients vital functioning via the lens).

The Museum of London is using AR to powerful effect with the release of its iPhone application called Streetmuseum. Imagine walking the streets of London with your smart phone and being able to see historical buildings and landmarks overlaid on reality, giving you a 3D experience of history.

The ramifications for education are phenomenal. Interactive learning materials will be delivered to students out doing field research. Virtual classrooms will be set up to accommodate students living in different areas. It represents a real dissolving of boundaries when it comes to both accessing and delivering information.

In terms of our daily lives, AR is also set to have an enormous impact. This again, enters the realm of ‘science fiction' where, for example, we will be able to have real time 3D conversations with a hologram image of a friend on the other side of the world.

An article from MobileBeyond outlines an array of mind popping possibilities that includes every day living basics such as directions, banking and parking, through to relationships, social status and dating.

Imagine a world where the vast ocean of knowledge available on the internet is at our finger tips every day, filtered through intelligent analysis, layering a new level of reality behind and on top of the physical world. This is AR and according to many sources, and fast developing technology, it is closer than we think.

Re: Create your own small business reality show Re: Create your own small business reality show - That's very true. I know I would work harder. But you're right....people like to see other people fail (sad to say) so I'm sure they'd watch it either way. Reality really keeps people interested. I think it's a way for some people to escape their own crazy lives for a while and/or a way to let them know they aren't the only one having a tough time.
Re: How do you back up your computer? Re: How do you back up your computer? - Seems like backup has definitely hit a nerve. Evan, thanks for sharing your experience with the Backblaze service. Regarding the time it takes to backup: * The initial backup will take a little while (one to two weeks for most users) depending on your Internet upload connection and the amount of data you have. You can click the "How long will my first backup take?" link to find out the estimate for you. * Future backups will be very quick as Backblaze will only backup new files and the pieces of those that have changed. Thanks! Gleb
Re: You don't need the new iPhone Re: You don't need the new iPhone - Reality bites, gone are the days when kids are playing outside running around... today they are just either infront of their computers or playing with their smart phones or other game consoles. It is not wise to waste your money over technology that gets a newer version every 10 months, but never the less you can't discount the fact that it has helped a lot of people. It comes in handy whenever you need it, it actually increased the quality of life in many aspects most people don't see because we've grown so much used to it. Imagine going on a hike then you are suddenly lost or went to another path away from your friends, you can simply call them to get to you or call the emergency hotline when you need to. Imagine riding the tube and suddenly remembered that you need some urgent information, would you skip the tube to go to library or the newstand? or will you stay and continue to where you are headed to and use your smart phone to get the info you need? If you are at home and thought of preparing a new recipe for your family will you go out and look for a recipe book? or will you just perhaps use your smart phone to look for a good recipe?.... Embracing new technology is not that bad nor does it hinder the quality of life.... but for what its worth.... some companies continues to upgrade their gadgets for the sake of "striking while the iron is still hot" then it makes us realize the marketing power they have, some people are contented with what they currently have while others swoon just to get the "latest"... The article is right, well if you go to this extent... you should realize that you can certainly do better than that....
Patent Walk-Through Patent Walk-Through - Hello everyone! My name is Alex, I'm 18 years old and I'm constantly drawing up new ideas and inventing stuff. I sketch stuff down everywhere I go and on anything I can write on. I'm a big member of our local Future Business Leaders of America chapter (FBLA). In the future I hope to work my way up to being a Venture Capitalist. I think of myself as a pretty creative person who is very motivated. Some of the ideas and inventions I come up with are pretty far out but others I consider marketable and to have great potential. Being 18, I have little to no connections and no resources. I've been surfing this site pretty frequently for the last year and have finally decided to join the forum group. Anyway, here's my question... Basically, I have no idea how to get a patent together the costs and the overall process. As of now, I think I have a great idea that, as far as I know has not, ever been done before. I'm really excited about this idea. I'm a total novice at this and am willing to learn all that I can. Any information that you can provide me with would be great. Again the main things I want to know are: 1.Overall Process. 2.How Long It Takes. 3.Costs. 4.Anything That You Think I Should Know. 5.Tips/Experiences. 6.Confidentiality. 7.Must I Make A Physical Model of My Idea? Thanks guys! -Alex
