Assign marketing budgets that break the bank!

Guest post by: Peter Lawless

Article Overview: That's right, break the bank with profit. Profit is achieved by maximising your margin on increased sales. Spending money on marketing wisely will mean your costs can be contained, while sales revenues increase. But how do you do that? This article discusses why measurement of everything, marketing that you do, is so vital.

Assign marketing budgets that break the bank!

Let's start off with some basic principles. You need to sit down and answer the following questions, if you really want to create a marketing budget that maximizes your profit.

* What is your average annual turnover? ......._______A
* How many customers do you have?................______B
* Customers less than a year old............______C
* Customers more than a year old .........______D
* What is your net profit margin? (%age) .........______E
* How many leads do you generate each year? ______F
* How much do you spend on marketing? .........______G

If you can convert more leads, by targeting better and closing more sales, then you will reduce your customer acquisition cost. I guess most of you will know where I am going with this, but it is remarkable how many people have not even done this basic exercise. In another article on CRM, I will refine this further, by helping you find out who your most profitable customers are.

OK, let's do some simple mathematics. To get how much each customer is worth to you do the following.

Customer Worth = (______A * ______E) / ______B – this is the Euro value of what each customer contributes to your wealth fund annually.

If you spend less than that on each lead, then either you are doing very well, or else you may need to spend more. Some marketing pundits, who want your money, suggest that you can afford to spend all of your profits, after your own salary, getting new leads. Personally 10-20% spent wisely can yield even better returns, as your business grows.

So how much do your customers actually cost to get?

Customer Acquisition Cost = ______G / ______C is this more than 20% of your Customer worth? If it is we need to look at two key things the first is your

Lead Conversion Ratio = ______F / ______C. If you can convert more leads, by targeting better and closing more sales, then you will reduce your customer acquisition cost. What's more, by analyzing which lead campaigns were successful insofar as they had the highest lead conversion ratios, you can target and focus better.

Conversely you could spend less on trying to get new customers, now don't just cut your budget, get a lot smarter in how you operate your lead generation programs!

So let's look at your existing customers. Are there ways that you could sell more to them? Sell additional products and services? It is said that it costs at least 5 times as much to sell to a new customer as it does to an existing customer.

Existing Customer Worth = (______A * ______E) / ______D

Simple mathematics again, either increase your existing leads generation budget by 1/5th and double your sales, or significantly reduce your lead generation budget and get better results and spend some of the savings on up-selling to existing customers.

In conclusion, by operating a smart lead generation campaign for customer acquisition while continuing to sell to existing customers, will reduce your marketing budget, increase your sales' revenues and break the bank with profit.

Depends on Products Depends on Products - It depends on kinda products, for mass marketing you surely need big advertising budgets, alternately there are businesses who do not want to advertise at all, as they take limited work, they target the class not the mass. so its either ways. for sure customer bears for the advertising cost. But also without advertising those products wont sell so much.
Sponsorship $ Sponsorship $ - Garth - typically small business owners don't engage too much in sponsorship because it usually acts as more of a branding exercise and is hard to tie back to sales. Have you looked at how the groups can increase your exposure to potential customers? Can you have your fliers handed out? Can you or someone from your company sit in on the meetings? Are you linked directly from their website? Small businesses need to stretch their marketing budgets as far as they can and you can't afford to be spending on initiatives that aren't generating results.
Best banks for business loans? Best banks for business loans? - Just as there are "chain banks" -- like Suntrust, where I bank here in VA, and which has at leat five banks here in the Tidewater area alone -- there are "stand alone banks." (Don't know if that's the proper technical term!) Banks that are small and have only one location or two at the most in any big city. "Local" banks rather than "national" banks, I guess. I would trust a national bank more than a local bank... I'd assume the smaller banks would be able to go bankrupt easier. (Although considering what has happened to Bear Stearns, who knows where the "little guy" can put there money and have it be safe!)
Re: How do you make the most of your day? Re: How do you make the most of your day? - Hi Cheryl , You gave some good tips here, I recommend trying them, because I tried them myself. It didn't work for me, Why? because when the timer go off, I tell to myself, just one second, i need to finish this or that, and than I take he break, and one second turns to on minute and 15 minutes. Or the other way, 10 minutes break can turn into 1 hour break. My luck (or not) I only have 2 hours to work online, so i squeeze my tasks to 2 hrs and that's it. I work with google calendar these days, schedule the daily tasks and create tasks for the unusual ones, and when i am done, I mark them. If I didn't get to some tasks I move them to the next day.
Re: How do you budget your life? Re: How do you budget your life? - Hi Kevin, This is a very interesting post and the very word ‘budget’ can bring some people out in a cold sweat. The fact is that everyone budgets every day but we may not actually call it that, it’s called living within your means. If it’s close to pay day and you are short of money you cut out the socialising and other extras and just manage on tick over until your next salary. On a personal level all my utility bills and fixed payments go out by direct debit on the 1st of every month, I can sleep better that way and can organise a budget for the rest of the month based on what is left. Naturally, with the global financial situation as it is I would think that everyone (or most people) have had to look at their finances differently unless you are already in a strong financial situation where you will hardly feel any pain. Governments always amaze me as they are always telling us they have no money but have contingency budgets for a whole variety of circumstances so it is all relevant to what you class as financial difficulty. regards, Mal.
