10 Best Opening Lines to Make a Connection

Guest post by: Maribeth Kuzmeski

Article Overview: I’ve asked many successful connectors – What do you say to open conversations with others? Are there magic words you use that make strangers open up and actually want to talk with you? What do you say to allow people to connect with you? The key is to help them connect with you, and in turn, you with them. You want to listen, not necessarily talk. To do that, you can control the conversation for as long as you want by asking good questions, paying attention by listening, and really separating yourself from others.

10 Best Opening Lines to Make a Connection

I’ve asked many successful connectors – What do you say to open conversations with others? Are there magic words you use that make strangers open up and actually want to talk with you? What do you say to allow people to connect with you?

The key is to help them connect with you, and in turn, you with them. You want to listen, not necessarily talk. To do that, you can control the conversation for as long as you want by asking good questions, paying attention by listening, and really separating yourself from others.

10 Best Opening Lines to Make a Connection (not cheesy pick up lines!):

1. I really like your [tie, shirt, blouse, shoes, purse, briefcase]. Where did you get it?

2. How do you like that phone? (then ask about their favorite and least favorite features)

3. Hi, How are you? (typical question followed up after they say “good”) Really?! Really how are you?

4. Have you been here before?

5. (Comment on something they are doing – i.e. if you are in a grocery store) Have you bought that before?

6. Are you from here?

7. Do you know where [PLACE] is? (directions)

8. I heard you like _____________. Can you tell me about that?

9. I heard you work on ____________. How can I help you?

10. Do you have the time? (followed by) I love your watch! Where did you get it?

What do you say to allow others to connect with you and open up?

Re: What's needed to start a business Re: What's needed to start a business - [i:33aoqwdi]With my little experience, i think all you need is an idea - business idea that solves a problem.[/i:33aoqwdi] An idea is a good start. So is going into business with your eyes wide open, and not believing the oft-heard refrains, "Be your own boss"; Make your own hours"; "Make lots of money!" The truth is that you'll give up one boss and gain hundreds (your customers); you'll make your own hours (working all 24 of 'em sometimes); and you will make money, eventually, but it takes years. I'd recommend starting a business in a field you already know, and that already has a demonstrated large market. You can make a name for yourself by offering a service in a new, better, more creative way than others may be doing. Then, if you listen carefully to EVERYTHING your customers say, they'll tell you everything you need to know to succeed. Yes, we've all heard about that guy Bill, and a few others who changed the world, but for the rest of us, it's a HUGE risk to go into business with an entirely new idea, hoping to teach the world something it doesn't know. Opening any business is risky enough. Save that one for the day when you're bored with your current, successful business, have money to burn, and will be able to laugh when the world doesn't jump on board.
Re: Quote of the Day - "The only people witho Re: Quote of the Day - "The only people witho - Thanks for sharing this Evan, there are some very powerful quotes in there, I particularly like this one:- You are now at a crossroads. This is your opportunity to make the most important decision you will ever make. Forget your past. Who are you now? Who have you decided you really are now? Don't think about who you have been. Who are you now? Who have you decided to become? Make this decision consciously. Make it carefully. Make it powerfully. regards, Mal.
Re: Success Re: Success - I think success is 2% luck and 98% persistence. While it's true that SOME people are successful due to luck, but the majority of the population has to work very hard to attain their goals. Opening a business require a ton of footwork. This means a lot of travel, a lot of networking, a lot of bank transactions -- just a lot of everything. If you're willing to put up with the monotonous aspects of business and you're willing to push forward, you're more than likely be successful. Also, make sure to cater to your audience/customer.

Business Failures That Boggle The Mind Business Failures That Boggle The Mind - Did anyone read, a few days ago, about the "popular New York eatery" Serendipity 3, that had to close its doors because it had failed its [i:ur1qdtij]second [/i:ur1qdtij]health inspection in one month. This eatery sells.... or should I say sold... $1,000 hot fudge sundaes and $25,000 sundaes... obviously not on a general basis but there had to have been some clients who paid for them... Lines apparently ran around the block every day... And they weren't making enough money to ensure that their kitchen was kept clean of cockroaches and mice? And after they failed their [i:ur1qdtij]first [/i:ur1qdtij]inspection, they weren't able to pull their socks up in order to pass the second inspection? Talk about incompetence...
