People ARE listening! The question is – Are you saying anything worth hearing?

From years of experience, I’ve learned that if I leave a voicemail message for my husband, I have to get to the compelling and important information at the beginning of the message. If I leave it for the end, he never really makes it there. He begins doing something I call “light listening” (i.e. He’s bored with his own wife’s rambling message and can barely pay attention).

How are your voicemail messages? How about your email communications? Are you communicating something compelling that is short and concise? Does it give anything of value? Or are you becoming a victim of “light listening” as you fail to get to any point in a timely manner?

A serial entrepreneur I’ve worked with, who seems to turn most everything he touches into gold, told me his secret to communicating well on the phone. He told me he writes out the voicemail message before he makes a phone call. And he does it before just about every call he makes. Then, if he has to leave a voicemail, he is ready. And, if he speaks live to the person that he’s calling, he is much more prepared. It is especially important when talking with a prospect, a strategic alliance connection, or a networking contact. Because if you don’t give them your best, you have left them with a lasting message that may have them questioning you and your abilities (it happens)!

These days I text my husband and get right to the point with information like… “Can you please pick up Shane at 6pm or he will be stranded at hockey practice?” Best to get the important messages delivered without the fluff. And, it’s hard to be that boring in 160 characters.

Re: More Difficult Sign Up Process to Stop Spammers... Re: More Difficult Sign Up Process to Stop Spammers... - Hi Trent - right now with phpbb3 the fields you add get added to their profile so if we ask them what 2+2 is it will show their answer on their profile which we probably don't want. As far as I know there isn't a way to have a skill question in there that makes they have to answer 4 as the answer. It was suggested to me to add another required field in which is why I put the favorite business quote and book in there so it kicks out most robots. People can put in whatever they want but they have to put it in which requires a person but it doesn't prevent people from getting spammers on elance who manually go into the forums. Definitely worth looking at other options phpbb3 has though - there might be new features that have been developed that can be implemented. Thanks for sparking the conversation!
Re: Can Google Alerts Increase Your Search Engine Rankings? Re: Can Google Alerts Increase Your Search Engine Rankings? - I use Google Alerts to keep track of who's linking to my sites, where my name shows up, etc. The idea of using it to improve SEO and traffic intrigues me. I'm interested in hearing the answer to Mary's question.
Re: What is your biggest challenge? Today? Re: What is your biggest challenge? Today? -

The question of quality comes into play at this point. [/quote:1f5i0uox] Yeah quality is often correlated with price, but paying more won't always guarantee higher quality. If you look around there is a huge amount of great writing talent that work at good prices. I was once one of those writers (started at $3/post) before I eventually ended up doing my own thing. The internet has empowered almost anyone to become a writer very easily, which has opened up the job market, pushing down prices considerably.[/quote:1f5i0uox] No, but it's a good indicator that you'll get good quality. People that provide quality know that they can raise prices due to the quality of their work. But, as you said, because of the competition these days, the prices are low and forcing people to charge less than they normally would. It's finding the balance between the price you want to pay and the quality you want that can be a challenge. You may have to go through several different freelancers before you find one that will be your long-term provider. I have a client I write articles for at very minimum prices. I don't mind it, though, because it's not my main service, and I know I'm helping the client out with getting more work. He has to charge lower prices because of the competition, so in turn I get paid less. This brings up the question: Should freelancers lower their prices just to please the market and risk losing money in the long-run? A problem I see is that people under-value their work too much and to the point where it's really not worth doing anymore. I would much rather keep my prices a bit higher and continue to provide outstanding service, rather than depreciate and devalue myself. Should we let the market determine how much we're worth, or should we tell the market how much we're worth and let it up to them to decide if what we're saying is true?
How to Qualify? How to Qualify? - Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I don't have any equity(house). This is my biggest problem. Now how do I go around the 'net worth' issue? I can get by the liquid asset since I probably can make some loan from family and friends. Net worth is my biggest roadblock since I have nothing close to that amount. So my question is, can I try to get a bank loan to 'work around' that problem? thank you.
