Branding the "Branson Way"

I had the opportunity to hear Richard Branson talk recently when he was in town and love his approach to creating a strong brand.

Richard has been immensely successful in carrying the "Virgin" name through his airline, record company, cell phone company and so much more (his newest venture Virgin Galactic is well worth reading about)!

At one point in his conversation he touched on the importance of having a great name and being able to create a strong brand around it. Richard created his brand in a less conventional manner than most. Instead of spending a ton of money on advertising, he chose the PUBLICITY route.

Renowned for such antics as crossing the transatlantic in a hot air balloon (more than once), dressing up in a wedding gown or stripping just about nude in Times Square hoisted on a crane, Branson has always known how to get attention for the Virgin brand and its newest ventures.

He learned a long time ago that his PR person was king (or queen)!

So what about your company or profession? Is there some way to be creative to attract some positive PR? To start, think of a message you want to get across. When you have come up with your idea, remember that timing and place are everything! So plan carefully. It's also important of course to ensure that the brand/name get a ton of exposure! Don't forget to tip off the media and most of all, have some fun....perhaps not to the degree of Branson....but then again!!

As GT said it means we should not put our eggs in one basket. the same could be said of buying shares. You should invest in many companies not just one. If one collapses you will be able to gain from the ones that are making profit. All said and done there is nothing like having your own businesses. Having multipple streams of income is the best way to go in this uncertain times. I learnt that Richard Branson have 320 different companies.

Losing My Virginity Losing My Virginity - I would like to second what Jennifer said about the recommendation of Richard Branson's book, "Losing My Virginity." This story-line book shows the inner-workings of the brilliant entrepreneur from his beginnings at age 11 when he first started his own magazine publication. This will allow a glimpse into the personality and mind-set that allowed Richard Branson to eventually become the entrepreneurial success that he is today. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. A very informative read. -Brandon
