SMEs and Client Gifts – should we or shouldn’t we? - Click To Read Article
As a small business owner, I understand the difficulty in determining whether to give clients gifts at this time of year. In my previous life as a corporate Marketing Manager, I received many gifts, some of which were good while others were just…. Now that I have my own business, I have been wondering what I should do for my clients this silly season. Here are some of my ideas.

Marketing tips to grow your business

No doubt you have been reading in the press a fairly grim outlook for the Australian and Global economy in 2009. What I haven’t read though is a more positive perspective of how to grow business and do better in 2009 regardless of what is happening in the broader economy. Have you? Here are my seven strategies that you can implement, right here, right now in your business to get new customers and earn more money this year. Yes, in 2009. Sound like a good idea? Then keep reading!

Marketing on a Shoestring

One of the challenges of starting a new business or operating a small business is the ‘on a shoestring’ budget dilemma. So how do you effectively represent your brand, gain new customers and grow your business with little or no money for marketing? Keep reading!

Marketing – my three start up priorities

Are you considering establishing your own small business, or perhaps you are currently operating a business that you bought or started yourself? If you are, then we have found common ground. My name is Jo Macdermott and I am writing this article about my own marketing journey in creating a business that does just that: Marketing.

Marketing & Sales tools – going back to basics
- Click To Read Article
During this time of economic downturn, it is a great time to get ‘back to basics’ in all aspects of your business. From a marketing perspective, I have been focusing on this for a number of my clients. All of these efforts have not only delivered immediate sales results, but has helped to position each of the businesses as strong market players for the future as the economy starts to bounce back and boom once again.

Low cost marketing strategies – is there such a thing?

I recently spoke at an event covering the topic of using time more effectively in business. The audience was a group of small business owners who are often stretched for time and have to manage multiple projects and tasks in any given day. Being the owner of a small business myself, I reflected on what I have done today. In summary, I have been the Account Manager, Sales Person, Book-keeper, Project Manager, Debt Collector and IP Lawyer all in the space of a few hours. Just in a days work really!

Make it a good news story

As a Small Business owner operator, business is often personal. So what happens when our business or we as the business owner ‘stuff up’? Because it is personal, do we take it as a reflection on our own character? Do we bury our head in the sand and pretend that it didn’t happen? How do we deal with it when there isn’t an organisational structure to hide behind? It can be quite challenging. I think that ignoring the problem is the worst thing you can do. A better approach is to acknowledge your shortcomings and try to turn a negative story into a good news story. Here are some recommendations on how.

In Marketing - one size does not fit all

One of the great things about travelling overseas is that it makes you look at things from a new perspective. I have just returned from a trip to Japan and was fascinated by the number of international brands operating there and how they prosper in what are very different trading conditions from their home countries and Australia.

Design on a Shoestring

As a marketing professional you will be not surprised to read that I am, well at least partially, obsessed with design. Yes, I like to have things looking right and in place. However, does ‘looking good’ make a real difference to bottom line results? When I started the Next Marketing business I was convinced first hand.

Are E newsletters dead?
- Click To Read Article
If you’re a business owner on a Shoestring budget, no doubt you have either seriously considered or currently use email marketing as one of the strategies in your business to generate sales and increase your brand awareness. In the Next Marketing business, I write a regular e newsletter and also use email-marketing campaigns to promote events. I have found these to be a successful and highly cost effective marketing tool in my business, however, given that most companies have some type of email marketing program, is it too late to start a program now?
