For many small businesses the fourth quarter is generally planning time for the upcoming year.
But before you can put together a new marketing plan, you need to evaluate how your current plan performed. Then you can make any changes and tweak, add or revise your plan for the next 12 months.
Below are some questions you can use to poke and prod your brain into evaluation mode!
- Did you actually do all the marketing activities you had planned? If not, why?
- Did you make any big changes to your plan during the course of the year?
- Did you market enough to break through the marketing clutter? Or did your message get lost?
- Was there a big change in your industry that affected your business and marketing?
- Were there new competitors on the scene that changed the "playing field" dramatically?
- Did your marketing plan have a mix of several (at least 4) marketing tactics?
- Did you rely heavily on one or two specific tactics?
- Did your marketing actually reach your intended target audience?
- Is your marketing message doing a great job of telling people what your Unique Selling Proposition (USP) is?
- Does your marketing message get across the benefits and solutions that you offer?
- Does your marketing plan reach people in several different ways – i.e. audio, video, writing, speaking?
- Does your marketing give people several different ways to communicate with you – i.e. blog, email, ezine, newsletter, teleseminars, webinars, etc.?
Next you need to think about anything that may impact the marketing plan that you create for next year. Below are some questions to get you thinking:
- Has your business situation changed?
- Have your goals and objectives for your marketing plan changed?
- Do you have any new products or services that you'll be launching this year?
- Has your target group changed? Are you still trying to market to the same audience as last year?
- Did you get any feedback and suggestions from current clients and customers that you need to incorporate/address in your new marketing plan?
- Any big changes in your pricing structure?
- Do you need to make any changes in current ongoing marketing activities? For example, change the format of your ezine, do a website makeover, design new business cards.
- Are any of the marketing tactics not really working anymore? Do you need to replace them?
- Are there any "new" marketing tactics that would work for your audience and business?
Now is the time to get going on next year's marketing plan. Use these questions as a starting point and have fun!
