Target, Target, Target

I know I have written about targeting your marketing before...but this is such a crucial area I thought I would revisit it and give some examples of where it can be used.

I was reviewing a prospectives customer's website yesterday as part of my e-marketing system...it was a really nice looking site, well designed and well laid out...clearly written by a web professional. However it was clear to me that the business had not been through a targeting process.

The website was written very broadly with little focus, the descriptions on the pages were broad, the meta tags on each page were broad and the text within the pages was vague.

Now lets get one thing clear here... if you want to get to the top of a Google search you need to be specific about the target you are going to address! This is a vital, simple but often overlooked point...let me explain.

When a prospective customer does a google search they will often be searching to solve a specific problem...this is true of when ever a person does a search to solve a problem...offline or online.

As an example, lets take 'loose dentures'. If this is the problem that needs solving then that is what your patient will search for. If you offer a unique solution to this problem then bingo...there is a match.

If you take 'loose dentures' as your target market and you wish to optimise your site for this then these words need to be repeated in the page title, the description, the meta tags and the main body text. 'Loose dentures' is the target market, so 'lose dentures' get repeated everywhere and becomes your tag.

You then also use these tags in your Youtube videos, your Flickr photos and as tags on the website itself.

Without deciding on a specific target for your marketing you can't decide on your tags...without specific tags you ain't gonna do well on a Google search and your lovely site won't get found.

So before you spend £££s on a new website, get some marketing advice, spend time deciding on your specific target market, what are the wants and needs of that target market, decide which words that target market would use to search for your services, then optimise your web presence (not just your website) for these keys words.

So, if you have got to the top of a Google search with your business...how did you do it?

What kind of target markets are there and what words would they search for?

How could you break down your market so each segment can be targeted?

Re: How should i promote a new website? Re: How should i promote a new website? - ignore this message IF it's already been stated. I haven't had a chance to read all the replies and i have to jet from the office... I suggest marketing where ever your Target Market congregates. If it's a forum of concerned parents - go there. Strike up a deal with the forum owner (JV) and have him promote it to the list of members (Integration Marketing). If you want to go with Forums then i would partner with a parent who is a frequent poster/moderator on a particular Target Market Forum and have him/her add your link to their signature. That was just a thought but it's not as intense once you get buy in from the Forum owner or high ranked poster/moderator. Hope that sparks some new ideas.
Re: Top 5 Magazines For SEO Re: Top 5 Magazines For SEO - Hi GT, Thanks for the update, I have checked out the others and as I think Jeff said earlier in this post, B2BM is the only free one as the rest are by subscription only although Target Marketing Magazine is free in the US only and there are some qualifying criteria to observe before you are accepted. I can’t justify the subscription to all of them but I will sign up to B2B and if any members subscribe to any of the others then perhaps you could give us some feedback, regards, Mal.
War Time clothing niche War Time clothing niche - Dan, interesting niche. Can you share some of your lessons learned in the following areas: 1. Marketing (Target market? and how you reach them) 2. Do you dropship or stock the products yourself? 3. How do you encourage repeat sales by your current customers? We don't get too many people in the Internet Business share these experiences. Your timing with the niche seems appropriate with war on everyones mind in the States. Do you find that during the last few years you've been getting more hits?
Re: How do you overcome the fear of rejection while selling? Re: How do you overcome the fear of rejection while selling? - If you are prepared and know what are your primary and secondary goals before you call (or visit) your potential client - you will feel less fear and more confidence. Draw them in – open them up. At the end of every statement, ask for their approval or observation. Get the potential customer into the repetition of approving every step that you take. Target the benefits of your product and not the features. Use “W” – open them with questions starting with a “W”. Why, who, when, what are all questions that lead to a response. And follow with “Is that OK?” And remember - people are rejectiong your business proposal, not you personally.
