What Is Your Company's Vision?

Some of us become entrepreneurs by choice. We have a desire to share our knowledge or our passion with others.

Some of us have entrepreneurship thrust upon us. The 50-something executive who has recently lost his or her job, realistically may not have a lot of options aside from starting their own business.

Regardless of the case, each of us wants our business to be a success. However, what constitutes success, varies enormously from person to person. For some of us the goal is purely financial. For others it is the ability to share with the world a particular type of expertise. For still others, the goal is to better integrate ones personal life with their professional existence.

Which brings me to the topic of vision and the importance of having one for your business. Why is having a vision important? It's my belief that your vision is what motivates you to wake up in the morning and go to the office with enthusiasm. Vision is what enables you to overcome the setbacks and frustrations that are an inevitable part of owning a small business. Having a vision enables you to do what is necessary in order to achieve the success you desire.

It's interesting to observe that the biggest danger to achieving your vision is complacency. For example, the effort that it takes to launch a business is often considerable. Reaching that first rung on the ladder offers the temptation to forget the vision we initially had, and to begin to settle for something less. Not surprisingly this invariably leads to a nagging sense that our business could be better. We begin to wonder if the struggle was worth the effort.

It's been reported that most owners of small business would actually make more money if they continued to work for someone else. I’ve often wondered why? My personal conclusion is that once the vision goes, so does the motivation to continue to push the business forward. A modest level of success seem acceptable.

So what is the answer to complacency? Although this is a complex question which deserves a more complete answer, part of the solution is to never lose sight of your vision. Keep it where you can see it. Revisit it frequently. Most importantly, make sure that you are able to articulate your vision regardless of how long you have been in business.
