5 Impeccable Ways to Grow Your Business
One of my favorite thoughts on business and personal life is from Don Miguel Ruiz. In his book, The Four Agreements, his first agreement shares a powerful direction for all of us.
Be impeccable with your word.
Being impeccable with our word can mean many things - honesty, sincerity and a positive intent. Impeccable also means never using words with malice toward another. It can also mean clarity of communication - assuring that our audience gets a clear picture of our meaning.
That's a tall order, yet it's also a great way to stand out above the noise, to claim and live up to a reputation focused on truth and integrity in business dealings. That's certainly a reputation that will attract buyers.
So how can a business be impeccable with its words? Here are five signs of an impeccable company. Impeccable companies display:
Gracious competition: Impeccable companies don't dis their competition. That's a sure way to make you look bad. If you really want to be smart and impeccable, try sharing your view on what your competition does well, graciously and factually.
Truth in advertising: Impeccable companies don't over-promote everything they do. They tell the truth, keep it simple and are clear with every communication.
Under-promise and over-deliver: Status quo says to thump our chest and promise anything to win the business. Impeccable companies do the opposite - they under promise what they can do for a customer, win the business and then over deliver. That's a great way to create incredible customer support and positive market buzz.
No ego: Great companies don't focus on me, me, me. They focus on you, you, you - the customer and the benefits they receive. Their words are all about what's of value in the lives of their customers, how they can better support customers, how customers can win with them. That's because they know if customers win, they will too!
Focus on the solution: Forget about whining about the competition, that unfair contract, the problem with your supplier that makes it OK for you to be late to deliver. Impeccable companies focus on the positive and the solution - taking responsibility for their actions - and a focus on solving any issue vs. making excuses.
Don Miguel's lessons apply to all aspects of our lives. When we apply them to business - our customers and prospects will recognize our integrity. That in turn helps them to view us as a partner they can trust and then proactively move toward a business relationship with us.
That's a much more sustainable foundation for a customer relationship vs. being the chest thumping vendor who can do it all - and disappointing our audience.
