How do you Draw the Line?

I was raised to believe in the potential of people, to see others at their best and hold them there - even if they were struggling to live up to their opportunities. I was brought up to have faith in people.

I still operate that way. The alternative is too darned negative for me to comprehend. But right now, I'm struggling with how to live by that philosophy and also run a business in the best way.

That belief is causing me gravity. It's nothing new - it's caused gravity in my life for a long time - in some really interesting ways.

You see, I have a repetitive pattern of trusting people - seeing them deliver on their commitments, believing in them and their excuses - until they drop the ball completely. That's when I end up holding the empty bag as they disappear into the sunset. My eyes are wide shut until it's too late - and I am hurt.

It's happened time and time again in my personal and professional life. I was stood up at the altar at 21 and never saw it coming - and since then my heart's been smashed by some of the best conmen around. I've been taken financially by less than honest people (multiple times) and most of my business partnerships have been a one way flight - my cash going to their pockets.

I swear I'm a savvy business woman. But when it comes to seeing the truth about others, I'm wondering if I'm way behind the curve. My trust seems to have poor eyesight.

I had yet another occurrence this week. A big blindside. But we won't go there - same story different day.

The bottom line is that I'm tired of being the trusting person who takes care of others and gets bit in the butt. This time, I'm determined to open my eyes and see the truth about my world, and the people in it, forever more.

But I need your help. I'm struggling with where to draw the line between trusting people to step up and pulling the plug before they cause damage - to my personal self or my business.

So here's my question for you.

How do you draw the line between being fair to others - and being fair with yourself and your business?

Re: How do you overcome the fear of rejection while selling? Re: How do you overcome the fear of rejection while selling? - If you are prepared and know what are your primary and secondary goals before you call (or visit) your potential client - you will feel less fear and more confidence. Draw them in – open them up. At the end of every statement, ask for their approval or observation. Get the potential customer into the repetition of approving every step that you take. Target the benefits of your product and not the features. Use “W” – open them with questions starting with a “W”. Why, who, when, what are all questions that lead to a response. And follow with “Is that OK?” And remember - people are rejectiong your business proposal, not you personally.

profit line profit line - I recommended Profit Line to one of my clients and they were not 100% satisfied with the service. Cold Calling Cold Calling - Hey Guys, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with hiring someone on straight commission cold calling. I am offering a co-worker 15% of my gross sales to cold call for one month (Line provided by myself) to set up meetings for me in Vancouver. I will be providing him with basic training, he seems pretty eager to try it out, but everyone usually is. Any tips or stories would be great! Thanks, Pete
Re: Teen Investors Re: Teen Investors - [quote="LoveInventions":22s6btro]Being that my main source of income is from playing poker professionally I can see where your coming from, BUT I will say this just because you’re involved in sports betting/gambling doesn’t make you an addict, as with anything in life it’s up to the individual to set and stick to limits, just like with alcohol or food. I think it could be great for kids but it would only work if someone was there offering advice and tips and making sure that they learn from their mistakes. This could be so valuable in their development.[/quote:22s6btro] Hi LoveInventions, You're absolutely right. There's a huge difference between gambling/betting for fun or a profession vs being addicted. However, I just don't want people to "glorify" the power of the stock market or investments because I've known some people who have lost thousands (more than $20K) of dollars and gone into depression (or worse). In addition, when I made my comment, I was referring to the kids who are addicted (or aren't content with their losses) to Pro Line and the stock market. At one time in elementary school, I was betting on Pro Line every week and losing all of my allowance as well. Sure people can argue, "nothing ventured, nothing gained"... but the problem with that idealism is that you typically only hear about the few success stories, rather about than the millions who have lost their money. I think high schools should have more courses and projects where students participate in mock investment buying/selling/trading, so that no real money is lost.
