Little White Lies

There's nothing wrong with a little white lie, right? So we deliver an upbeat message to our team to keep everyone engaged. Why share the reality that the we're in a bigger mess than we want to admit, even to ourselves? It will only make things worse.

Or we over-promise our capabilities to win a new customer. We will find a way to satisfy their needs, and they'll just love us when they get to know us.

Maybe we stretch the truth about ourselves - our experience, our skills. We're sure we can learn on the job and do well - we always have before.

Little white lies can lead to great big problems.

When we set an expectation - that expectation is taken as a commitment. If we set that expectation with a little white lie - we begin our commitment out of integrity.

Sooner or later, the truth comes out. In the worst case, we lose the respect and trust of those we 'mislead'. In a better case, we sneak by with only a minor ripple - we met that customers' needs, even if it did take an extra month or so. But we still lost some of their confidence when the truth emerged.

In the best case - no one ever knows about that little white lie. We get by and live to tell another - the next time we don't want to face reality.

White lies quickly become dirty dark secrets.

No matter how we rationalize them, white lies are still lies. We can't base our business, or our lives, on untruths. When we start from a faulty foundation, we're setting ourselves up for the fall.

Just read the business section and you'll still see examples of that sad, sad truth. The names you see there didn't start out by telling their ultimate whoppers. They began with tiny steps across the line of truth.

As part of my New Decade commitments - I'm watching myself for those little white lies. I took a good hard look and realized I was guilty of stepping across that line - and I didn't like it. Not big stuff - just baby steps. But no more. I'm sticking to my truth. And yes, I'm learning to share it more graciously as part of the journey.

How about you?

Favorite Christmas movies Favorite Christmas movies - Back when us kids were young (my parents had 3), my mom, sister and I would watch White Christmas every Christmas. (My dad and brother were never interested.) Now the rest of the family is scattered, and only I live close to my parents. We got away from the tradition, but now my mom and I watch [i:1h8kfk2v]White Christmas[/i:1h8kfk2v] again. (Just as every Halloween we watch Arsenic and Old Lace.) I also like the 1970 musical [i:1h8kfk2v]Scrooge[/i:1h8kfk2v], starring Albert Finney, much better than any version done since! I do have to say I've never liked[i:1h8kfk2v] It's A Wonderful Life[/i:1h8kfk2v]. He spends all his life having his hopes and dreams shattered, feeling miserable, and its only at the end of his life that he can look back and realize how many friends he has, etc. But that doesn't change the fact that up until that point he was miserable!
Book: Why Good Girls Don't Get Ahead But Gutsy Girls Do Book: Why Good Girls Don't Get Ahead But Gutsy Girls Do - Book: Why Good Girls Don't Get Ahead But Gutsy Girls Do: Nine Secrets every career woman must know Kate White 1995 Foy years Kate White lived as a good girl - a rule follower, a people pleaser, a busy beaver - until she was passed over for the job of editor-in-chief of a magazine she had been running for months. She finally realized that being gutsy, not good, was the only way to succeed. A gutsy girl : 1. Breaks the rules 2. Has one clear goal for the future 3. Does only what's essential 4. Doesn't worry whether people like her 5. Walks and talks like a winner 6. Asks for what she wants 7. Faces trouble head on 8. Trusts her instincts 9. Takes smart risks This book has NO table of contents, but above are the chapter headings. A good book, although I really wish they'd stop talking about "girls" and start talking about women.
9 Lies that are holding you back 9 Lies that are holding you back - I've picked up this book to assist me with my conversations when coaching business clients and I've found it to be quite enlightening as distinctions are made. The book is titled "9 Lies That are Holding Your Business Back..." by Steve Chandler and Sam Beckford (aka Small Business Millionaire). I'll use this post in two ways: 1. To highlight A Lie 2. To help me internalize the concepts by writing about it in my own terms/understanding so that I can use it in future conversations (yes, I'm feeling a lil selfish and want to take you guys along with the journey) first post to arrive shortly on the First chapter: Lie#1: I Just Need to Know [i:23sag391]How[/i:23sag391] to Do This"
Does poll data sway you? Does poll data sway you? - A few weeks ago, an article based on poll data said that white democrats wouldn't vote for Obama, and gave all sorts of numbers, like 75% of White Democrats won't vote for Obama, 64% of White Democrats think Blacks are lazy, etc. And from this article came a lot more articles complaining about racism in the US and how, if Obama lost, *that* would be the only reason why. HOwever, for myself, I simply didn't believe the numbers. Why? Because although the article was referring to "60% of all white democrats" feel that and 80% of all white deomocrats think this... if you went down to the very bottom of the page, you saw the sample size. 2,227 people had responded to this poll, and yet it was being reported as if they had talked to millions of people, how else justify saying "All white Democrats." I know polls are supposed to help take the pulse of the nation, but I really think that the way the news is reported is what sways opinion towards a candidate. For example, if these poll articles posted the sample size in the *first* paragraph, and pointed out that the percentages they are talking about are of "those who responded to the poll", not of "all" people, the average reader would realize what a crock it is. As Isaac Asimov once said, statistics works great with large numbers, with small numbers you are on very rocky ground, and to make sweeping declarations of institutional racism among a political party based on 2,227 respondents is very rocky ground indeed!
Business plans are a waste of time Business plans are a waste of time - I really like what Shri said in a previous post about how the usefulness of a business plan depends on the individual. However, after reading some of Martin Lindstrom's "Buyology: Truth and Lies About Why We Buy"... I'm beginning to think that all business plans and traditional market research (i.e. using focus groups, surveys, etc.) are a total waste of time. No joke, I'm serious. Lindstrom says "That's because, just like market research, economic modeling is based on the premise that people behave in a predictably rational way", but "Most of the brain is dominated by automatic processes, rather than deliberate thinking. A lot of what happens in the brain is emotional, not cognitive." ("Buyology" pg 28). Basically, consumers will tell you one thing, and do simply do another with their unconscious minds.
