My Own Personal Storm

Today I want to share my own storm - and how I ignored it until it was in my face, ready to blow me over.

I've been a successful consultant in high tech and complex product markets for over two decades. I'm known as the Spin Doctor and Secret Weapon by my venture capital friends...because I seem to see opportunities that others haven't seen. I'm especially known as a turnaround expert - having worked with them for the past ten years.

All of that means I have a clearly defined space where my skills and expertise are known and respected. The turnaround experience is especially powerful in today's market. Since our markets and economies shift, either we learn to shift and evolve - or we crash and burn.

It's pretty clear where I should be focusing my time and energy. Yet for some reason - based on advice from a coach who is no longer around - I turned away from that oh so obvious market opportunity. Instead - I've focused on markets that the coach knew. My skills and experiences are valid in those markets - but I don't have the credibility or distinction there that I have in my power markets of complex B2B businesses.

So what's my storm?

Well - those markets aren't powering my business forward the way I'd like. That's been the case for a while now, but I've been looking the other way. Creating more systems, more promotions, more everything to break into those new markets. Even as the winds of fighting to reach into new spaces and buyers have been blowing right in my face.

Why did I keep heading into that storm, even when there are calm waters to be had for me and my expertise? Because that's what my coach told me to do. And since my coach knew books and authors and speaking better than me - I listened. Even if it meant heading into rough seas and big headwinds, beating my head against the proverbial wall.

I've headed straight into that storm for months now. Knowing it was stormy, knowing I was fighting an unnecessary battle. All for the wrong reasons.

Well - no more.

I'm shifting my course and heading back into the calm seas of what I know is true and right for me. I'm facing that storm and making a conscious choice - to shift away from it and into a place that I already know is prosperous, the perfect positive storm for my expanded success.

And as I write this, I'm still wondering - why did I ignore that storm for so long?

Have you been ignoring your own storm? How can you step up and shift - away from the storm and into prosperous waters?
