Those Damned Assumptions
We're all pretty much programmed to have assumptions. We assume things based on our own perspectives, our history and our observations.
We apply those assumptions to the world around us - to our business, co-workers, employees, friends, relatives, mates, children. We assume our minister is a grand person and our leaders are conscious and astute.
I'm learning that all too often I base my views of any situation on my own self, perspectives and experience. That would be just fine if everyone else was game just like me. But that's not the case (and let's all say a big THANK YOU for that blessing.)
Assumptions create Gravity in a very sneaky form.
Instead of seeing the reality of what is happening, we see a reality we create thanks to our beliefs, strengths, weaknesses, fears and more.
How do we ditch the gravity of assumptions?
Start asking questions.
Those questions will help us see the truth, to open our eyes and accept what is before us - not the reality we want to see or are programmed to see.
Here's my starter list of questions for myself:
- What are the actions occurring in front of me? What's the truth of this situation - right now, not based on my own beliefs?
- How does the current reality compare to the promise or contract? Is there a delta? If so, how can this situation be resolved? Is it being resolved - or are there just promises with no actions to prove a shift?
- Am I focused on my own well-being and business realities, or am I leaning forward with an outstretched hand, ready to fall into the abyss as I try to pull the other out of the pit?
Thanks in advance for sharing!
