We're Stuck!
The recent economic downturn shook us up, there's no doubt about it. Most folks I talk with are still reticent to believe in any upturn. Instead they anticipate more rough seas ahead.
We're stuck in the status quo of a failed economy.
Things have been tough. But that doesn't mean our market environment can't, or wont' change. In fact, history shows us that downturns offer opportunities for change and expansion, if we take advntage of the opportunities for new markets, new approaches and new customer needs.
How can we see the opportunities if we can't trust in change?
You've all heard me talk about my new wild child mustang, Maverick. He's been such a teacher for me. This last week I rode him for the first time, and then we showed him at the Trainers Showcase at the California Horse Expo in Sacramento.
Maverick blew away the handlers from the Grace Foundation -the folks who rescued him from a fate worse than death at the Nebraska 3-Strikes Rescue area, where he and 200 other mustangs were found starving, abused and wandering around amid their friends' carcasses who had passed before them.
Maverick stopped trusting in change.
At the show I learned that he was the worst of the bunch when he arrived at the Foundation. They had to sedate him to give him medical treatment, to work with him in his paddock, to get near him. I knew he was afraid - but their stories made me realize just how far my boy has come.
Maverick learned to trust again.
After only 2 months at Moon Valley Ranch with my trainer Deb Cooper - the most amazing horsewoman I've ever been blessed to meet. He's playing with me, nuzzling me, calm and happy, relaxed and accepting of his happy fate.
Maverick also taught me the power of trust this last week - when I rode him for the first time. A week before I'd watched him take off his 20 year old trainer in 4 jumps - you can see that video below.
Needless to say, after watching that (I was filming on my iPhone), I was a bit tentative about getting on him. But ya know what? I decided if he trusted me enough to let me rub and play with him after 2 months, I could trust him to take care of me. Just look at what happened.
We weren't perfect together - but for a first ever ride on a wild child Maverick - it was a huge success. And it happened all because of mutual trust.
So my question for all of us is: "How much do we trust our world? Our economy? Our business?"
In a world where skepticism rules, maybe the lesson we all need to learn from Maverick is that it's time we trusted more.
When we're stuck in mistrust - we're contracted and missing opportunities.
When we trust and believe things can change - we open ourselves to see new opportunities for growth and expansion.
Think about it.
