What is Gravity?
I talk about Gravity a lot.Especially these days, since my new book, Defy Gravity, is coming out soon. So people are asking me..."What the heck is Gravity?"
So here we go. For the next couple of days I'm sharing a bit about Gravity.
First of all - I’m not talking about the gravity we all know. The gravity that holds us to the earth and keeps our world from floating away.
I’m interested in Business and Personal Gravity – and you should be too. Why? Because Business and Personal Gravity are the single biggest reasons we get stuck in the way we've always done it and stop growing.
We all create our own Gravity. It’s human nature. We are learning machines. We learn through our experiences - the good, the bad and the ugly. That’s how we create Personal Gravity – the belief systems and filters that make us who we are. The problem is – other than some natural and civilized laws, what we learn becomes obsolete as time moves on. Or it's erroneous from the beginning. When we continue to hold past truths near and dear to our hearts even as they become stale – we get stuck in Gravity.
The first form of Business Gravity comes in the Way We’ve Always Done It.We get stuck in patterns, repeating once successful behaviors and processes until they are, well, losers. Theway we’ve always done it is the reason for the mess we’re in. And if you’re not in a mess, just keep doing it the way you’ve always done it – and you will be.
Then we have our Corporate Legends. They live long, but we don’t always prosper. Corporate Legends are based on business experiences - successful or not so successful. For example, when we win with a specific value in a specific circumstance, we hold it close as our best value-add -forever. We lose in a market so we decide we can’t sell successfully there - ever. Those beliefs are based on reality at that point in time. which means they may or may not be true at a future point in time. And that's where we get Gravity - when we still apply those beliefs or patterns to our decisions even when they are no longer valid.
Tomorrow - we'll examine some of my favorite Corporate Legends.
