Profitable Online Business Ideas and the Recession; Persistence

I believe that next to inaction, the lack of persistence is one of the biggest reasons for failure in this industry. Lack of action and inconsistency can destroy your business before you even get started and at any time after you get started. But enacting both and staying consistent with your work habits can lead to tremendous rewards. I would like to share a personal experience on both.

As I shared in an earlier article, I grew up in the mountains of north Idaho in a small logging community. I had moved away for awhile and tried my hand at a different career. After a few years we moved back, Idaho was home. Logging was just about the only thing to do for work, so I went back to work in the woods. I was seriously hurt a few months later. Before going back to the work in the woods I had thought and talked about starting my own business. I knew that there was no future in logging. I knew the chances were high that someday I would be seriously hurt. But like so many people, I just talked about it, it wasn't a necessity.

But on December 17th, 1987 it became a necessity. It was a miracle I survived the accident. I spent nine months on crutches, and went through nine surgeries and two knee reconstructions. When I got home from the hospital I realized I needed to be serious about changing my occupation and my life. I knew of a business I wanted to buy, which was for sale. So I proceeded to work on financing for it. I knew nothing of financing a business. I had no money put away for such a purchase. I had never owned or operated a business. Nobody in my family had ever owned a business for that matter. Nobody in my family had any money to loan me. I had friends and family tell me I couldn't do it. But deep inside me, I knew I had to do something different.

It would have been easy to just do nothing. It would have been easy to just stay on work mans compensation and stay home. It would have been easy to go on disability. I had never done anything like this before. I knew I had to do something different. I knew I wanted more in life than what I had. The most important thing that I realized in all of this was that I needed to do it now! So on crutches with my leg in a cast I went to work. I didn't wait to heal up. The next most important thing I did was something every day to acquire that business.

I believe that persistence is one of the most important traits and yet it's one of the most lacking traits in most people's lives. Can you be persistent and consistent every day? Can you be persistent and consistent under any circumstances? I went to every bank in town and all of them said no. I went to the SBA and was told no. I went to venture capitalists and was told no. But I had resigned myself to the fact that I was not going to take no for an answer. All the while that all this was going on, friends and family were telling me to give up. "Just go back to work in the woods, you're not a business owner." Many times I had to sit down and have a talk with myself. What kept me going was the dream. The dream of having a better life for my family. In my mind I didn't have a choice.

During this time, the nine month period I had five additional surgeries on my left knee. It would have been easy to give up, but in my mind the desire, the dream of a better life was greater than my physical circumstances. I believe the best thing that I had done was to create a habit of persistence. No matter how many no's I received I kept pursuing my dream. No matter how many friends and family members told me to quit, I kept pursuing my dream. No matter how many surgeries I went through I remained persistent. I did something every day to reach my goal.

I think one of the most important ideas that I can convey to you is this: I'm no superman. I'm just a regular Joe like anyone else. The only difference is, I made up my mind to purchase that business and I took action immediately and I remained consistent in my daily actions to achieve my goal. Set daily work habits and remain consistent, everyday. It's just like rolling a huge boulder down a hill. It's hard to get it moving, but once you do you want to keep it moving. As it goes faster and faster it comes to a point where you don't have to do any more work to keep it moving. The momentum it has keeps it moving. Your online in-home business is the same way. Yes it's hard to start, you may not know what to do, but do it anyway. And once you start, keep moving forward every day. Don't stop, because when you do you lose momentum and it's harder to start again.

You can do this. People have gone before and blazed the trail; you're not on your own. But you have to take make the effort to start. You can do this, we believe in you. Get started to day!
