Succeed with a Signature Style
Developing a personal brand for your business is a significant step on the way to running a successful online business. It is all about making your business easily recognizable and standing out from the competition.
Taking this one step further is committing to a signature style that will increase brand awareness and give potential and current clients something to connect you with. Developing a branding strategy is something you can do from the beginning, but a signature style and the awareness that comes along with it is something that happens over time.
The first step in creating a signature style is being true to yourself. If you are an earthy person who wears hippy-style clothing then don't develop a glamorous line of ball gowns. Instead, stick to what you're passionate about and design vintage t-shirts and comfy blue jeans. If this is the clothing you wear on a regular basis, a customer won't be inclined to buy something high fashion from you. Matching your image to your brand is a significant step towards success.
Once you've found a business that's in line with who you are, think of ways to differentiate yourself from the competition. What will make you recognizable to the general public and your niche market? Think of the band Barenaked Ladies for a minute. What sets them apart from the millions of other bands out there is that they sing funny and upbeat songs. People connect them with fun and good times. Quirky, quick lyrics are their signature style; this is how they've branded themselves and made themselves recognizable.
You may try a few things out before you find the style that is perfect for your business, but once you do it's essential to stay consistent. You don't want to lose the sense of familiarity with your audience. Do you think McDonalds would ever print an advertisement in blue and white instead of red and yellow? People would have to look twice to realize it's the same fast food joint they've been eating at since they could walk.
Lastly, think of the late Michael Jackson. If you saw an image of one sparkly glove or the moonwalk would you need to see his face to know it was him? People like what they're familiar with and creating a signature style is the best way to keep them coming back again and again.
