Benefits to Attorneys and Law Firms in Technology and Computer Training

Large law firms have long recognized the benefits of continuing education and training for staff attorneys, paralegals and legal secretaries in how to utilize Microsoft Word and Office products to their maximum capabilities. The reason for this is primarily because attorneys use Microsoft Word in ways not dreamed of by ordinary users. For an attorney, documents are the central work product for their legal practice. What would a litigator be without pleadings? What would an estate planner be without Wills and Trusts? What would an intellectual property attorney be without applications and amendments?

For lawyers, paralegals and legal secretaries, documents ARE our BUSINESS.

If you are involved in passing agreements, correspondence and other documents back and forth electronically to opposing counsel, co-counsel and clients, then you can be assured that you are at times working with individuals who absolutely know how to use Word properly and efficiently, styling documents top to bottom! What you email to these individuals speaks a lot about who you are, your attention to detail, and your ability to produce something that can easily be modified as future generations of edits are made.

Let’s say you create a document, styled completely in Normal (Word’s most basic style format), filled with direct formatting commands and conflicting code, and then send that to an attorney who knows how the document should be assembled to avoid wasting time. You have just told the other attorney that you don’t know what you are doing and that editing this document is going to be a much more tedious process than it would have been if you or your secretary just created the document correctly from the start.

Unfortunately, due to the ever changing world of software, and the concentration of law school on the instruction solely on the practice of law, many people come directly out of university with only a cursory understanding of the actual products they will be working with on their computers from day to day.

This is where my company comes in. A completely online educational resource in how to use Word and other Microsoft Office products, we will serve as the trainers your firm may be restricted from hiring full time. For a small monthly membership fee, you and your staff will get state-of-the-art training in using your computers. Our training is constantly updated, and designed to put you on top of your game and then keep you there! See my author bio for additional details.

Michael Peregrine is a technology trainer for attorneys, paralegals and legal secretaries who manages Legal Technology Academy, a company based in Kansas City, Missouri.

I started working in the legal field in 1992 for a legal department in New York City. After returning home to Kansas City in 1995, I worked as a legal assistant and paralegal in several firms, including two of the largest firms in the State of Missouri.

I have always been a bit of a geek, however, and tend to gravitate toward technology both in the workplace and in my spare time. Recognizing a communication disparity that tends to exist between many firms’ legal practice and their technology departments, I saw the need for individuals who were conversant in both.  This led me to transition into a job as a technology trainer for a large law firm in Missouri, where I helped develop curriculum, presentations and documentation for an education program presented to staff counsel, paralegals and legal secretaries.

I enjoy sharing what I know, and feel like the coaching process can be very rewarding. Not only do I get the satisfaction in demonstrating something I know will make my students’ jobs a lot easier, but I also get the gratification of seeing people put the knowledge to work.

Starting in 2010, development began on an online educational platform (http://www.my-legal-technology-trainer.com) just for attorneys, legal secretaries, paralegals and students who plan to work in the legal field. I feel like there is a need to provide additional instruction tools on the products people utilize the most in the real world.

secure my connection secure my connection - I agree with Link's second post. Security is a personal sticky issue and possibly not the first service you should introduce yourself at the door. I'd suggest also the Back to School "In-Home" Computer tuneup (it's such a pain to take your computer in for servicing) and promise that they would see a smoother and faster computer. You can hand them a 2 page report on the benefits of having a computer tuneup -> this is critical. After you are gone this is the only piece of information that they will have to begin trusting you and want to have you in their home. You can sneak at the bottom of the report the benefits of having a wireless connection and the importance of Securing it. finish off the report with two dotted rounded rectangle boxes beside each other. One has a free Computer tune up assessment and the other a free wireless network security test. If they take you up on either you can test for the other. You now have two sources of possible income.
Protect yourself from Hackers Protect yourself from Hackers - I received this from a newsletter from FXpro that I subscribed to. Please read and apply In the 21st Century internet is widely used for everyday job. Despite the "ease" and free time offered from internet use, one should be aware of the dangers and be prepared to avoid and safeguard him/herself from any attacks his/her computer may accept or even from the "unwanted" e-mails received. Golden Rules of Protection When using the internet make sure you have an antivirus program installed in order to avoid intrusions in your Computer, If you are using wireless internet connection make sure you have your connection locked, Do not save any official documents on your Computer, such as Copy of Passport, ID, Bank account numbers, copy of cards in case your Computer is hacked or even stolen, Keep all access codes/passwords in a safe place, Do not share an e-mail address with any person, Do not reveal any access codes, passwords to any person, If you are using a public Computer, ie in an internet cafe, make sure you log out any internet sites you have visited before leaving and deleting the cookies in order to minimize the risk of someone following your tracks, Regularly change your passwords on your e-mail accounts, or any other account that requires passwords, Be careful of e-mails received. Always check the e-mail address and in case you believe that this does not come from a person, Company, Organization you might be dealing with always send an e-mail to an e-mail address stated on the person's business card, Company's, Organization website requesting them to confirm that the e-mail address on the e-mail received belongs to them, before you reveal any information, Always have in mind that an established Company/Organization never uses an e-mail address such as g-mail, yahoo, hotmail etc thus always be careful when you are receiving such e-mails, even if it appears to be from a Company/Organization you are dealing with, Always remember that a Company or Organization will never require you to send them your login/password/access codes, When using a website that requires an access code, do not allow the browser to remember your passwords
