Home-Based Internet Business On a Shoestring

So, you want to join the thousands of people who have left the traditional work world behind and started a home-based Internet business. But you’re worried about the cost. Relax. There are any number of ways to climb this hill, and you can start an Internet business with a minimal investment. Even then, your home-based enterprise can grow into something truly life changing. When you work online, you have the power of the Internet kicking in the afterburners on your efforts. Online work is a cost-effective way to build your own business with reduced risk and unlimited potential. Getting Started

Among the many advantages of becoming your own employer through a home-based Internet business is that you already have the key equipment you need.

You have a computer, right? Welcome to the world of doing business on the Internet.

With your computer, an Internet connection, and an Internet service provider, you can establish your home-based business. In fact, as the Internet has evolved, it favors people just like you trying to create a start-up operation.

A website need not cost your home-based Internet business anything to build as many Internet service providers offer Web-building tools.

The cost of keeping the site up for a year is under $20. Starting an Internet business with tools you already have and services that cost about what a dinner out does is the very definition of a “shoestring budget.”

What You Won’t Spend

There are 2 areas of cost for traditional businesses that you won’t face with a home-based Internet business.

First, you don’t need to save massive amounts to bridge you over after you quit your job to start a new activity. You can start your home-based Internet business while you work, build it into a profitable activity, and then quit.

You also won’t need the cost of a location. (See those words “Home-Based.” The offices for your home-based Internet business are at home!)

Don’t let fear of costs keep you from this opportunity. Starting a home-based Internet business can be done effectively and profitably on a shoestring.

Michael Peregrine is a technology trainer for attorneys, paralegals and legal secretaries who manages Legal Technology Academy, a company based in Kansas City, Missouri.

I started working in the legal field in 1992 for a legal department in New York City. After returning home to Kansas City in 1995, I worked as a legal assistant and paralegal in several firms, including two of the largest firms in the State of Missouri.

I have always been a bit of a geek, however, and tend to gravitate toward technology both in the workplace and in my spare time. Recognizing a communication disparity that tends to exist between many firms’ legal practice and their technology departments, I saw the need for individuals who were conversant in both.  This led me to transition into a job as a technology trainer for a large law firm in Missouri, where I helped develop curriculum, presentations and documentation for an education program presented to staff counsel, paralegals and legal secretaries.

I enjoy sharing what I know, and feel like the coaching process can be very rewarding. Not only do I get the satisfaction in demonstrating something I know will make my students’ jobs a lot easier, but I also get the gratification of seeing people put the knowledge to work.

Starting in 2010, development began on an online educational platform (http://www.my-legal-technology-trainer.com) just for attorneys, legal secretaries, paralegals and students who plan to work in the legal field. I feel like there is a need to provide additional instruction tools on the products people utilize the most in the real world.

Re: Who inspired you to start? Re: Who inspired you to start? - Hi Evan, I was inspired by Mr. Bill Gates ever since I was a student learning Computers. But I was motivated for Internet as my Business, when I read his book "The Road Ahead" in 1995. It was in this book that Gates laid out his vision of an interconnected world built around the Internet. Based on the premise that life will be transformed by the convergence of inexpensive computing and inexpensive communications, Gates drew from his experience at the center of the personal computer revolution to give insights on the growth, evolution and impact of technology. I had always looked up to Bill Gates as my idol. When I read this book, it made me more focussed on Microsoft and Internet, The Internet was one of the upcoming things in this time. So I took over to the Internet as my primary business. Regards,

Re: How many mambers of this forum are also member of WF? Re: How many mambers of this forum are also member of WF? - Hi Kevin, I have to agree with Tanny. All forums are unique in their own way, but doesn't mean that one is better than the other. What you might get out of one forum, you may not get from another. For instance, the WF focuses on Internet Marketing, while this forum focuses on Entrepreneurship. Each has their own set of benefits. I don't think you can really compare one to the other, unless of course they focused on the same topic. I have learned a lot from this forum, stuff I would never have gotten from the WF. With that being said, I've learned a lot from the WF, specifically since I need to know about Internet Marketing and running an online business. The addition of the Online Business forum here will help, and Jeff is doing a great job as moderator.
Re: I thought social sites were a waste of time. How wrong I was Re: I thought social sites were a waste of time. How wrong I was - Social Media has only really been understood this last year or two. Before that I didn’t really understand or like Facebook for example because of the problems separating Family and Friends from Business. Twitter seemed a total waste of my time and a lot of people seemed to spend all their time building up their followers to brag about how many they have got. Now I understand the basics a bit more I can appreciate the value particularly of Twitter in building up relationships with others in your niche with a view to doing business later. If people follow me and are active in the general Internet world or marketing in particularly then I follow back immediately otherwise I don’t see the point. You could argue I suppose that someone who breeds dogs and enjoys painting for example might suddenly become an Internet Marketer and I am missing out on not following them but I tend to stick within my niche. regards, Mal.
