Evolve Your Strategic Mindset

Most entrepreneurs are gifted technicians. They bring good technical ability to a business and assume that is all they need to succeed. How mistaken they are! Most have not been taught how to effectively manage and grow a business. As they enter into business, it is very easy for them to become consumed by non-essential "stuff" - to get overwhelmed and distracted by details and low-priority, low-value activities. These entrepreneurs are trapped sometimes, working harder and harder, but on more low-value, low-payoff activities. They have technical mindsets. Because of their addiction to technical work and low-value activities, their personal and business lives become complex, cloudy, and confusing. They may start to lose focus, miss opportunities, adopt bad habits, underutilize their talents, get in comfort zones, make excuses, etc. Many are workaholics who have very little balance in their lives. Developing a strategic mindset, can be the cure for much of what pains them.

Here are some simple steps you can use to start your strategic mindset journey:

1. Face the reality of where you currently find yourself.

2. Understand the benefits of being strategic versus technical.

3. Be willing to break old habits and start some new ones (good ones).

4. Start reflecting, deeply, and embrace the truth.

5. Understand you're in the Marketing business, first and foremost.

6. Engage a coach that can ask you consistent and tough questions, and then write down truthful answers.

7. Get ready to develop and implement business strategies around marketing, selling, leadership, people management, and more.

The development of a strategic mindset won't happen overnight and can't happen without tremendous focus/commitment. Is it easy to make this transition? Absolutely not! Do world-class athletes complain to their coaches about making changes and drilling on fundamentals? Of course they do! Do you know how many practices shots Larry Bird took before every game? Let's just say he would show up several hours before each game and practice until game time. That was one of Larry's pre-game strategies. Larry Bird's business was basketball. Ours is what it is, right?

In a sense, my coaching business functions as a "workaholics anonymous". We help entrepreneurs break their addiction to technical work by focusing on strategies for their business and lives. When these strategic mindset strategies are developed, implemented, and followed-up on, they are effective. GET STRATEGIC and you might just have a successful "business of life".

Do you believe in "Mantra" or "Mission Statem Do you believe in "Mantra" or "Mission Statem - In the Strategic Management course I'm currently taking, my group and I were supposed to come up with an improved mission statement for the organization we're analyzing or explain why the existing one doesn't need to be revised. However, business expert and author, Guy Kawasaki says "Forget mission statements; they're long, boring, and irrelevant. No one can ever remember them-much less implement them. Instead, take your meaning and make a mantra out of it. This will set your entire team on the right course" ("The Art of the Start" 3). Which do you use for your own businesses: Mantra, Mission Statements or neither? Thanks

Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Tami, Have you reviewed other comparable sites and coaches? I think that you will find that they have positioned themselves a bit more 'out there', and they dont focus on cheap pricing as the key benefit. I think your copy needs to be much tighter with a focus on the key features and BENEFITS that group coaching provides. Look at The Strategic Coach model etc. Your bio needs to be stronger if you are going to be pitching business development and leadership development. Also, have you put together a strategy for list building and promotions? how many subscribers do you have currently. Local networking as well as grouping some of your existing clients into the first BETA group might help. People dont like 'NEW" services because it comes off that they will be the guinea pigs. Those are my initial thoughts for now. Hope it helps. I'll try and spend some more time reviewing over the weekend and get back to you! Jude
