There Really Is No Free Lunch For Entrepreneurial Success - By Deborah Young

I have two questions for you:

If you're that "go to" guy or gal and you don't own your own business, maybe you should. Entrepreneurs are natural risk takers and problem solvers - and a good thing, too, since risk taking, no matter how well planned, inevitably creates a crisis or ten! And risk takers with good business sense always have a Plan B.

While consistently supportive, my parents were also keen on letting me figure things out for myself. They served as very good role models for entrepreneurship and self sufficiency and a strong work ethic. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger nicely summed up this philosophy when he said, "Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength." Struggles definitely make you stronger. They also make you smarter and more self sufficient.

Self-sufficient does not mean you can't ask for help. But it's the WAY they ask for help that sets entrepreneurs apart from the masses. Which of these approaches do you take when you have a problem?

Option 1. I'm in it deep this time. What am I gonna do? Billy Bob will know!

Option 2. I'm in it deep this time. Let me think. Let me think. Ok, I could do A or B - but I'm not sure which solution is best. Let me call Betty Sue and get her opinion.

True entrepreneurs will invariably choose Option 2. Choose isn't really the right word. It's almost an instinctual reaction for an entrepreneur: Here's a problem. How can I fix it? Some people are born with that "take charge" attitude, others develop it over time. And a good step toward developing that entrepreneurial instinct is to always choose a solutions based approach to your struggles.

"Deborah is the type of person you look to when you have an impossible project, impossible timeline, and so many variables you don't know where to start counting. She is the person you bring in and know it will all get done and people will walk away satisfied. How often does that happen even in the best of circumstances?"
