Hard Times Give Birth to Healthy Entrepreneurs

Are hard times good for our health? According to a recent article by Christopher Ruhm that may well be the case. Ruhm tells us that a one point increase in the unemployment rate sees a corresponding drop in total deaths of up to half a point. Assuming this is correct, WHY does it happen? Some theories suggest that with fewer people working there are fewer people on the road to be involved in car crashes. Apparently a one point uptick in the jobless rate results in up to a 3% decrease in traffic deaths. Would you believe that there is also a significant decrease in heart attacks during hard times? Lifestyle changes designed to stop or curtail spending may be part of the reason. During an economic bust period we tend to exercise more, cook at home more, and spend less (and therefore consume less) on alcohol and tobacco.

Rules for Success and Health

I have a different - albeit unscientific - take on the situation.

In many ways, getting laid off is a very freeing experience. Suddenly your time is your own and you decide how to spend it. You have more time to spend with family and friends. You can spend more time on hobbies you enjoy - or take up new ones. You can give back to your community in a very personal way instead of just by writing a check.

Have a Talk With Your Inner Entrepreneur

You also now have the time to have a good long chat with your inner entrepreneur. Is this the right time to finally strike out on your own instead of looking for another 9-5 grind? Could this be how you continue to have time for all the personal pursuits you've recently rediscovered?

It can be. You CAN create the lifestyle you want by working smarter, not harder. You CAN set your own schedule - doing something that you love. You CAN have all the advantages (and then some!) of people with J-O-Bs without the down side. You CAN have it all: the money, the time, family and community involvement. You CAN have the freedom.

And when you are in control of a situation, isn't it less stressful - even if you're working hard?

So, if you've been hit by the unemployment ax - or even if you only think it's headed your way - view this as the opportunity it is to change the direction of your life. Not only may you be happier; you could end up healthier as well!

P.S. The title of Ruhm's article is "Economic Conditions and Health Behaviors: Are Recessions Good for Your Health?"

Finding solutions is second nature to Deborah but - getting back to that whole "trust" thing - don't take her word for it, take it from someone she's worked with:
"Deborah is the type of person you look to when you have an impossible project, impossible timeline, and so many variables you don't know where to start counting. She is the person you bring in and know it will all get done and people will walk away satisfied. How often does that happen even in the best of circumstances?"

Re: Does birth order influence the desire to start a business? Re: Does birth order influence the desire to start a business? - I think this study is bogus. I don't think birth order influences any of this. It's the nature vs nurture argument magnified. Some is nature, but most is nurtured through child development and adolescence. Birth order has nothing to do with it.
Re: Info for would be franchisers... Re: Info for would be franchisers... - [quote="Sebastien":1d29sdv1]Like Franchise Times, Franchise Update is a very practical magazine. There is no blah blah, just straight facts that anyone in the franchise community can relate to. I just want to mention that all these magazines are NOT franchisee oriented. I mean these magazines are for franchise professionals. If you're looking to buy a franchise, you won't find much information in there. To answer your question, getting published in Franchise Times was fairly easy. I don't want to brag too much but I think I am known in the franchise industry. I was the marketing guy at Franchise.com for a few years before joining my new company, the World Franchising Network. So people know me and I have a very good relationship with Nancy Weingartner, the Managing Editor at Franchise Times. I was talking with her at the last Franchise Expo South in Miami and she mentioned she'd like me to be profiled. I was like "ok, sure!". I like this franchise executive profile thing in Franchise Times as it is rarely BS. People are usually really natural in there.[/quote:1d29sdv1] Thanks for the follow up Sebastien! And I can't say that I'm surprised that networking with the right people and managing your relationships with them properly are the keys to being published. I guess the old adage holds true of "it's not who you know, but who knows you" that's important.
Does a New Company need a "Big" PR firm? Does a New Company need a "Big" PR firm? - I've started work with a brand new company that is going to do loss mitigation. My boss intends to hire a "big" PR firm - ie one that costs a lot of money - because he wants press releases sent out to the New York Times, the LA Times - all the major papers around the country - and he think they'll be more likely to print them if they come from a "big" firm as opposed to a one-person PR firm. I think it doesn't matter where the press release comes from as long as its well written. What are the opinions here?

It won't matter if the press release is well written if no one has the opportunity to read it. I also believe that credibility comes with having your press release in an established source like The New York Times, LA Times, etc... For instance, if you enjoyed playing tennis, who would you trust more? The advice from a recreational tennis player who has his own column in [i:dmj1i0sv]Tennis Magazine[/i:dmj1i0sv] [u:dmj1i0sv]or[/u:dmj1i0sv] the recreational tennis player who has his own blog? I don't know about you, but I'd listen to the guy on [i:dmj1i0sv]Tennis Magazine[/i:dmj1i0sv] over the blog owner at least 9 out of 10 times.
Re: Does a New Company need a "Big" PR firm? Re: Does a New Company need a "Big" PR firm? - I agree with Kevin [quote:3b8fyubd]I think the most important factor is whether your press release will reach the most number of your target audience or not.[/quote:3b8fyubd] You dont a big company that will charge mega bucks as Im sure they will even add a %age to the cost of the press release. Im sure if you approach New York Times, the LA Times with every thing presented professionally I think it will still stand the same chance. I would start advertising online, then locally thats when the NYT can see what there missing out on! And to test the water first!
