Unclutter Your Website Content to Start Getting More Clients Online
One of the biggest mistakes that people often make with
their websites is trying to cram too much into the content. It’s nice to give
options, but too many options will only overwhelm people and leave them running
for the hills (or, at least, as far from your website as possible).
Following are a few steps you can take to help visitors
avoid the overwhelm of too many choices, stick around your site longer, and eventually
buy your products and services.
Guide readers along a
chosen path
Take them by the hand and tell them exactly what you want
them to do next. No, this isn’t done to insult their intelligence; they just
really don’t know what to do next, and since it’s your site, you need to help
them figure it out. For example, on the home page, hone in on the benefits that
you offer and tell readers in a nutshell why they should stick around to learn
more. At the bottom of the page, invite
them to learn more (on my site, I have a “Next step” button that links to the
next page), and then on the second page you can talk about who you help (like I
do on my site) or further dive into the details of your benefits. Then the next
page could showcase your work samples and testimonials, followed by a page
giving an overview of your service packages. Finally, now that readers have a
great idea of how you can help them, invite them to contact you for a free
consultation to get to know each other better and further determine if you’d be
a good fit.
Choose just one
call-to-action per page
As indicated above, it’s best to just give readers one
option per page that helps them move forward. If your home page tells them to
“click here for a phone consultation, or click here to learn more about our
services, or click here to see what clients are saying,” they likely won’t know
where to start first. It’s okay (and recommended) to have a navigation menu
that lets people move freely throughout your site at their own leisure,
complete with links to contact you or learn more about you, but be sure to keep
the actual content on your website focused on one specific action step per
page.
Action step: Unclutter
one page at a time
If uncluttering your entire site at once seems overwhelming,
start with just one page, preferably the home page. Take five minutes to
determine the action that you want readers to take. Do you want to direct them
to your most popular products or services? Are you focused on having them join
your newsletter list? Or maybe you just want them to contact you for more
information. Whatever the case, get clear on what they should do next, and then
clearly ask them to take that specific step.
