The essential meaning of trackbacks

As a professional blogging company based in the UK, we felt obliged to start a mini-series identifying important aspects of the blogging structure. With millions of bloggers already online and many more set to blog, there are plenty of methods available to help everyone share and promote their content.

Trackbacks are a fundamental part of blogging. If you read a post elsewhere that influences you to respond to that article, then you are likely to create a trackback to the original article from your blog.

This process is essentially a communication tool for bloggers to notify each other of articles related to their content and help develop the blogging world.

Many bloggers use trackbacks to promote their content to a wider audience and influence the likelihood of becoming noticed. Pings also increase the chance of creating relationships with other bloggers and share common interests and audiences.

One post acts as a teaser for another blogger to develop the original topic or idea. For example, blogger A could write an article about how beneficial Linkedin is for business networking, which encourages blogger B to produce a post identifying why Linkedin is good or bad for business networking.

This method outlines the foundation for a topic, with the option for the reader to find out more through the trackback. By creating these links, the reader is always presented with the opportunity to develop their knowledge further through multiple sources.

Trackbacks produce three major positives for your blog; ? readership, optimise SEO & quality content.

1- You increase readership by promoting your blog elsewhere. Not only are you giving your blog extra exposure, but also towards the desired audience. Having a link within another blog provides an easy and convenient way to influence readers to visit your content. The trackback will include the title of your post, the name of your blog and a short extract from what's been written.

2- Creating a trackback provides a valuable incoming link to your blog which search engines love. Incoming links indicate that your website is highly perceived, increasing the value of your site in the eyes of search engines. The more links, the more encouraging for improving SEO.

3- Anyone will tell you to emphasise content over appearance. Understandably your blog needs a clear structure for navigation and presentation, but ultimately readers visit blogs for the content. Traffic coming through trackbacks already guarantees interest to the topic of the blog, so make sure the content surpasses their expectations and encourages them to return.

So what are you waiting for!? Discover a new world of blogging, become engaged in highly demanding topics and create trackbacks to your blog. You will soon discover that not only will traffic ranking increase, but relationships develop too.

Re: Do blog comments help or hurt your site? Re: Do blog comments help or hurt your site? - I don't ever approve any pingbacks or trackbacks and I see no reason why anyone would. If there really is a link to your site from their post (which is rare, usually it's just spam) then it will still be there whether you approve the ping/track or not. You actually get more benefit if you don't link back, which is what happens when you approve them.

I regarded it as a kind of "courtesy" - after checking the sites first. Next time I'm moderating comments I'll start trashing pingbacks. Thanks!
Re: 2010 Social Media Marketing Industry Report Re: 2010 Social Media Marketing Industry Report - [quote="Alan Mater":3vkduro4]Hi Terri, Interesting report. The stats are intriguing. Social media has come a long way, and it's almost essential these days to help build your brand. I would say Facebook and Twitter are my top two. MMO Social Network is starting to pique my curiosity, and it seems I can get some nice exposure to blog posts. It's important to find sites that work for you personally and then build up a profile on those sites. I believe it's here to stay and should be a regular part of our marketing efforts.[/quote:3vkduro4] I totally agree -- it's essential, and you need to figure out which network(s) work for you and focus on them. I'm curious...what is MMO Social Network? I did a quickie google search but only came up with Massive Multiplayer Online games...
