3 Resources For Finding Niche Topics For Squidoo Lenses

Don't you just LOVE being in the know?

We all know that knowledge is power, and that if you want to position yourself as an expert, you need to have knowledge that people want.

It isn't enough to know that your second-cousin on your mom's side is double jointed and should really be in the circus...because outside of family reunions and reality television, when is that going to actually be useful?

That said, I'm going to share three helpful resources for identifying knowledge that is actually worth having, and better yet, worth creating lenses about.

Of course there are more than three, but I didn't want to overwhelm you.

By focusing on just three resources, you are far more likely to take the additional step of actually checking them out (as opposed to simply scrawling them down on what is no doubt an ever-growing to-do list).

So, let's just stick to these three for now.

Resource #1: Tweet Scan

After Twitter search was disabled, folks were scrambling about looking for a way to quickly obtain information from Twitter. Tweet Scan is one of several such directories, but it is the one that I use the most often.

What Makes it a Great Resource:

On the Tweet Scan homepage is a tag cloud that creates a visual representation of the topics that are the "most tweeted" at that particular time. The larger the type, the hotter the topic. If you want more information on any particular tag, just click on it.

It doesn't get much easier that this - and there is plenty of potential to stumble upon blogs that offer feeds that you could utilize in your lens creation.

Resource #2: Alexa

From Alexa's website - "Founded in April 1996, Alexa Internet grew out of a vision of Web navigation that is intelligent and constantly improving with the participation of its users. Along the way Alexa has developed an installed based of millions of toolbars, one of the largest Web crawls and an infrastructure to process and serve massive amounts of data."

What Makes it a Great Resource:

By glancing at their homepage, you can quickly get a run-through of the top ten hot URL's on the web at any given time. Want more than ten? Click on the link at the bottom of the list.

For those who like to get their information from RSS, you can quickly get a look at the top sites by country by subscribing to one of Alexa's free feeds.

Resource #3: Springwise

I love this site! It features cool, innovative business ideas from around the world. Broken down into multiple categories, you can browse this site easily, and come up with literally DOZENS of lens ideas.

What Makes it a Great Resource:

From their website, "Springwise and its network of 8,000 spotters scan the globe for smart new business ideas, delivering instant inspiration to entrepreneurial minds." The site also has a Most Read quick list on the home page, for those who may be in a hurry. While you are browsing the site, don't forget to sign up to receive their weekly newsletter. I would recommend this site for anyone who is interested in staying on the cutting edge of new business trends and ideas.

Is Squidoo an effective tool for you? Is Squidoo an effective tool for you? - When Squidoo first came out I signed up a few lenses to promote some of the activities I was up on on my site and showcase some of the famous entrepreneurs we had featured. I found that it did not generate a lot of traffic and I stopped investing the time. Now I'm reading more and more about spammers taking over Squidoo to create landing pages and they have decreased the quality of content on the site. Has anyone had success using Squidoo?
Re: What are the ways to start a business with a small capital? Re: What are the ways to start a business with a small capital? - Hi John, I agree with the others, get yourself a blog, join a few affiliate programs related to music, write articles and submit them to article directories with a link to your blog in the resource box (no links in the article itself) and create a Squidoo lens. Add new content to your blog and Squidoo lens as often as possible and you'll start seeing some results. Also make sure you follow GT's tips about SEO Good luck, Carol
Re: Best Internet Marketing Strategies Re: Best Internet Marketing Strategies - It's funny to come across the phrase "don't put all your eggs in one basket" on the first thread I check out - after seeing the exact phrase on a blog about Squidoo's policy changes last year. If you rely on a single strategy - such as, for example, building multiple Squidoo lenses about your affiliate programs, you are effectively at the mercy of the managers of Squidoo. They brought in a much stricter policy about links and spam last year, a lot of lenses were shut down. Even with web hosting it probably makes sense not to rely on a single website or a single web host. What are members' thoughts on the number of marketing methods to employ, and in what percentages? In my case, for one of my games sites, it would be approximately: 1. Website seo, keywords and unique content 40% 2. Blog 25% 3. Forum 15% 4. Article marketing 10% 5. Squidoo 5% 6. Twitter & Facebook 4% 7. Broadcasting to my list - 1% (This needs to be built up...)
Re: Teens make $$ on Squidoo Re: Teens make $$ on Squidoo - I make a residual income from Squidoo, and some of it I give to charity. But I never made lenses for that reason, more for a wider promotion strategy. In all honesty I don't think squidoo is the best strategy for making money online, since Squidoo takes a big chunk of your earnings and you don't have 100% control of your content. The advantage is your pages have some ranking power out of the bag, but with consistent effort you could have your own site which ranks. If you want to make $500/mo from Squidoo you'd need between 100-1000 quality lenses (depending on niche and aff. comissions), be specifically promoting a good product using your own affiliate links, and do a little bit of promotion to your lenses and profile. A keyword juicy title for your lenses is also a must so do some keyword research and go for LONGTAIL. I recommend you also create your own site and link the squidoo lenses to that, and also incorporate other authority sites where you can publish content like ezinearticles and hubpages.
Viral Marketing With Squidoo Viral Marketing With Squidoo - Another effective viral marketing strategy is to take advantage of Squidoo. Make a page - actually, make several pages - related to your main business. The great thing with Squidoo is that you can post your affiliate links. Next, start browsing other people's pages, award the good ones with four or five stars, and post a comment on them. Some of these people will reciprocate, and that will push you up the rankings. Also, some of the other people who visit their pages will see your link and click through to view your pages - especially if you leave an interesting comment, I guess.
