Don't Ring the Bell - Develop a Success Mindset

Some time ago, I was going through an extraordinarily difficult time with my business. I felt like I'd tried everything, that I had nowhere left to turn, and that the universe was telling me to give it up. For every step forward I made, I seemed to take a step back at the very next turn. I had no desire to keep pushing, and there was nothing left. As I relayed this to my coach at the time, the emotion of it all overwhelmed me and I started crying. I couldn't do it any more. I had no more energy to keep trying. It was over.

My mindset at the time was certainly a challenge for all her coaching skills! So what did she do? She told me a story. She told me the story of a movie, GI Jane. I hadn't seen the movie but immediately went out and brought it home. If you've seen the movie you know the story, but it's the visual and the symbol of the bell that's important.

GI Jane, up against the male marines, had it tough (as you would imagine). Anyone who couldn't endure the test of extreme physical marine training could ring the bell. Once they rang the bell, it signified the end of their test and the end of their career in the marines. Ring the bell; game over.

Close to ringing the bell and ready to give up, nothing left, no more to give, GI Jane is about to ring the bell. BUT, somewhere deep within her she finds the mental strength to turn it around and focus on not letting them defeat her. She was exhausted and physically shattered, but her mental power kicked in and she kept going. She never rang the bell and was a stronger human being because of it.

I always thought that when people talk of someone who ‘gave up too soon' or gave up when ‘success was just around the corner', it never made any sense. I always thought that it was ridiculous because who knows how far away success is, or that if you just keep going (and going) success will be yours.

Now I understand because I put it in the context of the bell. I f you've never been standing next to that bell, and refused to ring it in spite of your overwhelming desire to do so, then you probably won't understand.

Sometimes you may need to correct course, or change your perspective, but if you have the mental capacity to not ring the bell, I believe you have the capability to achieve anything.

Re: Did you buy into the iPhone 3G craze? Re: Did you buy into the iPhone 3G craze? - BTW, on the whole cellphone thing. I heard that Bell (most probably Telus too since they share Bells network) will be moving over to a GSM network like Rogers - that should level the playing field and give you access to a whole range of cool unlocked phones. Eventually Rogers, Bell and Telus will be moving over to new standard that is a level up from GSM....LTE I think?!? Anyways I believe the Canadian government is also making space for a new provider by selling some frequencys. Exciting times ahead for communications in Canada and maybe we'll start seeing the competitive rates they have in the US?
Should I Outsource My Sales Function? Should I Outsource My Sales Function? - Last month my website passed 200,000 monthly visitors and, as a result, we have started receiving an increasing amount of interest from advertisers wanting to reach the target audience on my site. We’ve landed a deal with Bell Canada, one of Canada’s largest companies, and are in discussions with two major online companies. Bell Canada came to us as a referral and the other two companies both came to us, presumably after doing a search and finding my site. To date a lot of the revenue from our site has been from programs such as Google AdSense but we’ve increasingly looked at private sponsorship. Bell Canada was our first corporate sale and we’ve also sold smaller ad spots to some of the experts we profile on our website. We have also recently been approached by a website representation company. They basically do the work of finding advertisers for you and are your outsourced sales team. The company I’m in touch with is a reputable firm as a few of the other websites in my industry are also using them. Should I work with them? The upside is I could attract more brand name advertisers to my site and it could free up my time to be able to focus on building even more website traffic which, in turn, would drive more revenue. There is also no up front cost to working with this company. The downside is they take 40% of everything they bring in and want to work towards an exclusive relationship. They are also charging the same rates that I am already charging and quoting for the different sections of my site. As my site continues to grow I’m sure we’ll get even more attention from advertisers as well. My current problem is should I: 1. Continue as is and wait for more advertisers to come to me as I grow. 2. Bring someone on to be responsible for selling my ad spots. 3. Go with the website representation company and let them sell my site. What would you do in my situation?

Re: Who hates cold calling? Re: Who hates cold calling? - I saw this and had to chime in. I HATE COLD CALLS. lol its terrible and a wast of my time. Something i have done is gotten online and found all the networking event happening in my area for the next 2 months and i try and go to about 3 a week. Even just for an hour. Dont bring any business cards. Just meet new people ask them alot about what they do, not too much about what i do and follow up the next day or 2. Has worked well
