Bob Seger On Tour-Rock and Roll Never Forgets
I first met Bob Seger in 1980 while he was working on his second live
album “Nine Tonight” at Ambience Recordings in Farmington Hills,
Michigan. I was an assistant audio engineer for Gerard Smerek who was
Bob’s Detroit audio engineer. Since I was a huge fan, this was quite a
powerful experience for me. Then in 1981, I had the opportunity to work
with Bob again as assistant engineer for “The Distance” followed by
another project “Like a Rock”. I remember how hard Bob worked in the
studio and how well Punch (Bob’s manager for over 40 years) and the
whole Seger camp treated everyone, even the techs (staff who tuned
guitars and made sure the band was happy). Punch use to take everyone
out to dinner after the sessions and a couple of times I got to sit next
to Bob. I was amazed that very rarely people would ask for autographs
seeming to respect Bob’s down time. I believe this is still true today.
Shortly
after my Ambience Recordings experience, I launched Primeau
Productions and met Tom Weschler. While working for Floyd Wickman,
Primeau Productions, Inc.’s first client and my first mentor. Tom was
Floyd’s photographer and Primeau Productions, Inc. was Floyd’s audio
and video company.
Tom was a photographer by trade and always
shot PR photos of Floyd and his professional speaking events. We went
to Las Vegas with Floyd and produced several live conferences at Bally’s
and Caesars Palace.
Then in 1994, I got a call from Tom asking
if we video recorded weddings... Weddings were not on my radar but we
needed the gig and I had a great deal of respect for Tom. Since we just
moved into our first office space and overhead was high, I said, “yes.”
It was Bob Seger’s wedding! We video recorded Bob’s wedding and
edited a finished video with the help of another mentor of mine, Tim
Holmes. The experience went quite well and got another Seger video
opportunity a year later video recording and editing his first
anniversary party at Bob’s Michigan home. Since then, Primeau
Productions, Inc. has produced seven videos for Bob Seger. I am quite
proud to have Bob as a client, but am modest about it.
A month
ago, I was on Facebook and reconnected with Tom Weschler. Turns out Tom
and Gary Graff released a Bob Seger book last year on Wayne State press
titled, “Travelin’ Man.” It’s a great photo historical look back on
Bob Seger while Tom Weschler was Bob’s road manager and photographer!
No way? I never knew Tom worked for Bob from 1969 to 1977!
I met
Tom for lunch and heard his story on how he met and worked with Bob
Seger for eight years! Not only did he manage Bob and his band (s) on
the road, he took photos and designed album covers! I see how humbleness
played a role in Tom’s life. Never once while he and I worked with
Floyd Wickman did Tom tell me he worked for Bob Seger. In fact, Tom is
still friends with Bob and Punch Andrews and is a regular at the Seger
offices in Birmingham Michigan.
Long story short, Primeau
productions, Inc. has been retained to launch and manage an Internet
Marketing and professional speaking campaign for Tom Weschler around the
book “Travelin’ Man.”
Last week we interviewed Tom on digital
video at an old Royal Oak favorite watering hole “Ye Old Saloon” for an
upcoming series of videos about the book and to promote Tom’s
professional speaking business. He is still very humble but having more
fun now than ever before.
I truly believe that we are all
connected and if we listen to our inner voice as George Walther, CSP
CPAE would say we will be guided to where we really need to be. Some
would say I was in the right place at the right time. In my opinion, I
made the right decisions at the right time by listening to that inner
voice.
