The Video Revolution
Being an owner of a multimedia production company and an audio and video forensic expert, I am fortunate to have to keep up with the numerous amounts of new technology.
The biggest problem I have as I suspect many other producers also have is how to find the time to learn what we really need to know versus what is nice to know about new technology. By technology I mean video delivery systems for the internet, compression formats and production techniques for entertainment and information. Then there is video security technology and systems that not only watch your business when you can't, but also trigger alarms and perform tasks.

When video is hosted on the internet, it has to be compressed and converted for the player you wish to view the video on. There are many players to choose from. You could compare these players to the TV tuner of yesterday. Tuners were built into TV sets. Tuners were the part of the TV that picked up the broadcast signal. This technology was called television broadcasting. The TV program was transmitted over the airwaves (which the public owned). The video signal was converted to a wave and transmitted over through the air magically to at first thousands then eventually millions of TV sets that were set to a frequency or channel. A viewer could watch the program through that tuner shown on a TV screen or tube. At least that's how it worked in the old days.
Today, television programming is still broadcast but in an advanced way. A modern way is using satellite/ DSL technology, cable television through a series of wires hooked together.
The same programming that was sent through the air before is now sent to a satellite is sent to your tuner or receiver box in your cable system and decoded so your TV (tube or plasma) will play the program.
In this expert's opinion, the best -newest-coolest way to deliver video programming is the internet. Let me tell you why. Its portable, it delivers most of our lives today and its in every car, home and business in America today.
Did you know you could watch movies on your computer? Did you know you could watch movies from your computer hooked to a data projector and beamed onto a 8' or 10' screen in your family room? To me, this is much better than a 42 inch plasma TV. Just my opinion. You can also hook the internet to your plasma anyway. Did you know this is a fraction of the cost to buy a plasma TV with nearly the same resolution?
I'm getting a bit sidetracked, forgive me. Here is my point. As production experts, we have to know more today than ever to help our client's unique situation whether it's marketing or product sales with hosting their production as efficiently and effectively as possible.
The internet is similar in that we have to have a player (TV Tuner) as I mentioned before that can interpret the signal and play it on our computer screen. H.264, the latest and greatest compression that has replaced MPEG4 compression and encoding features a state-of-the-art video encoding codec called H.264, which delivers stunning quality at remarkably low data rates. H.264 is part of the MPEG-4 standard (MPEG-4 Part 10), this amazing technology gives you excellent picture quality on the internet from small video files using the QuickTime player. My confidence in Apple has grown as the result of H.264.
Huge Quality, very little video Files in QuickTime
H.264 incorporates smooth video compression to provide incredible crisp, clear video quality from the smallest amount of video data. This means you see crisp, clear video in much smaller files, saving you bandwidth and storage costs. Plus, at Primeau Productions Inc, we use H.264 to compress video files for emailing approval purposes. Yes, they look that good!!!
H.264 delivers the same quality as MPEG-2 (which is DVD compression and formatting) at a third to half the data rate and up to four times the frame size of MPEG-4 Part 2. H.264 is truly a part of the video revolution.
What is the Potential?
H.264 achieves the best-ever compression efficiency for a broad range of applications, such as broadcast, DVD, video conferencing, video-on-demand, streaming and multimedia messaging as well as basic emailing. Imagine recording a video message with your video conferencing camera and emailing it to your friend or work associate?
I am getting ready to record a video message to promote an upcoming speaking engagement. H.264 delivers excellent quality across a wide operating range, from 3G to HD and everything in between. Whether you need high-quality video for your mobile phone, iChat, Internet, broadcast or satellite delivery, H.264 provides a solution for all video applications. Look out Windows Media!!
What about HD?
The impressive efficiency of H.264 makes state-of-the-art video more accessible to more people, enabling you to experience the full quality of HD video on today's computers. With H.264, an Apple Cinema HD Display and an Intel-based Mac, you can turn your home office into a home theater, complete with gorgeous HD video playback.
